Con artist poses
as bank inspector
HURON/BRUCE — The Huron County
OPP and the South Bruce OPP wish to
alert the public to a scam that has
occurred in the area.
The intended victim receives a call from
a person posing as a bank inspector or
bank employee. The victim is asked to
assist with an investigation into a dishon-
est bank employee. The victim is then
asked to attend the bank, make a signifi-
cant withdrawal, and then turn the cash
over at a designated location.
According to police, a 91 -year-old,
Goderich woman was the victim of the
scam last Wednesday. She received the
call and, believing she was helping, went
to a bank and withdrew over $4,000,
which she turned over to the con artist,
who was waiting at the Suncoast Mall.
The same scam was attempted on an
81 -year-old Kincardine woman the next
day. Fortunately, she received some
advice regarding the call and immediate-
ly phoned police.
Anyone with information to assist the
police in identifying the person responsi-
ble is asked to contact either the Huron
County OPP at 1-519-524-8314, the South
Bruce OPP at 1-519-396-3341 or Crime
Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
