HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Times Advocate, 2004-08-04, Page 1414 Exeter Times -Advocate Wednesday, August 4, 2004 Community News Country singer at Exeter Rodeo EXETER — Canadian country recording artist Jenilyn Sheppard will be making a special appear- ance in Exeter, performing a free concert Friday July 6 at the Exeter Rodeo fol- lowing the Dodge Challenge. Jenilyn has been on the country music scene for the past 16 years and is eager to return to Huron County for the rodeo weekend. Residing in London, Jenilyn's parents and friends are from the Exeter area which makes the weekend even more exciting. "It's fun to come home and play for friends. We've been playing in a lot of dif- ferent cities which is a lot of fun, but it's nice to come home and see everyone." Jenilyn will be perform- ing with special guests, Sarnia's "The Good Time Band" comprised of key- board player George Webber, guitar player Michael Yurich and drum- mer Sue Webber. "I have been playing with these guys all year and they are so much fun to work with," said Sheppard. Dates are booked in Manitoba, Saskatoon, British Columbia and Alberta, where the singer will spend two months, playing rodeos, fairs and clubs. Jenilyn's talent has attracted interest from many diverse media out- lets. It has also led to a bud- ding emcee and modeling career, producing a national selling poster, magazine and newspaper coverage, hosting live/tele- vised sports and entertain- ment events. SAINTSBU The Rev. Stanley Jay was at St. Patrick's to celebrate the Holy Eucharist and to preach Sun., Aug. 1. Bob and Caleb MacGillivray and Suzanne Davis assisted with the scriptures. Prayers were said remembering Margaret Carroll, cousin Connie Noels, friend Dorothy Dietrich, Viola Atkinson who experienced an ordeal with an intrud- er at her home, and Hazel Davis. Rev. Jay and Liz Jay were presented with a card and gift of money from the congregation for the love and support they have shown to all at St. Patrick's. The singing of `Happy Birthday' was enjoyed for Liz Jay, celebrating in August. Heather MacGillivray assisted and was lay administrant for the Holy Eucharist. Service closed with prayer and reces- sional hymn. There is no service at St. Patrick's Sun., Aug. 8 as we continue on our sum- mer schedule. RY NEWS The MacGillivrays enjoyed a summer party with friends at Dungannon on the week- end. Courtney MacGillivray was weekend visitor with friends at Ajax and enjoyed several events in and around Toronto on the holiday weekend. Suzanne Davis enjoyed breakfast with friends at The Gossiping Goose on Saturday and also visited with brother and sister-in- law Bob and Dorothy Dietrich and friends Hugh and Mary Thiel, all of Zurich. Katie -Scarlett MacGillivray enjoyed an overnight with friends at Grand Bend on Sunday and Monday. Con artist poses as bank inspector HURON/BRUCE — The Huron County OPP and the South Bruce OPP wish to alert the public to a scam that has occurred in the area. The intended victim receives a call from a person posing as a bank inspector or bank employee. The victim is asked to assist with an investigation into a dishon- est bank employee. The victim is then asked to attend the bank, make a signifi- cant withdrawal, and then turn the cash over at a designated location. According to police, a 91 -year-old, Goderich woman was the victim of the scam last Wednesday. She received the call and, believing she was helping, went to a bank and withdrew over $4,000, which she turned over to the con artist, who was waiting at the Suncoast Mall. The same scam was attempted on an 81 -year-old Kincardine woman the next day. Fortunately, she received some advice regarding the call and immediate- ly phoned police. Anyone with information to assist the police in identifying the person responsi- ble is asked to contact either the Huron County OPP at 1-519-524-8314, the South Bruce OPP at 1-519-396-3341 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
