Farmers encouraged to call MPP
The Huron County
Federation of
Agriculture (HCFA) is
encouraging farmers to
contact their MPP,
Carol Mitchell, if they
too are wondering why
the provincial govern-
ment announced the
end of the Municipal
Outlet Drain Program.
The current govern-
ment is conducting
numerous public con-
sultations, which farm
groups are participat-
ing in even though this
is a busy time of the
year for farmers.
"Where was the cur-
rent governments con-
sultation on this deci-
sion?" HCFA president
Neil Vincent asked.
The federation partic-
ipated in a consultation
on drainage programs
in 2000 and at that
time members made it
clear to the govern-
ment the Municipal
Outlet Drain Program
was needed without
changes.
The announcement of
the program's demise
suggests the dollars

Denfi ld Livestock
Market Report
The Market at Denfield Livestock Sales traded on a good
demand at steady prices on all classes of fed cattle with the
fancy cattle very active at strong prices. Cows sold active at
steady prices. I would just like to comment that I have dis-
cussed the cow market with our live cow buyers and they
have assured me that they will support us in every way possi-
ble to assure our customers the best possible market for their
cows and that their cows will be processed within 24 hours
after arrival at our market. Cheques available immediately
following sale. Sows sold strong.
Dave Gowan, Allenford sold 12 steers avg. wt. 1360 avg.

program will be direct-
ed towards other infra-
structure programs.
"Municipal drains are
infrastructure dollars
-part of the rural
infrastructure that has
been key to the devel-
opment of a competi-
tive and efficient agri-
culture sector in
Ontario," Vincent said.
"There is no guarantee
that these redirected
dollars will be avail-
able to maintain this
infrastructure."
Vice president Nic
Whyte feels "that by
having the grant avail-
able, it encouraged
farmers to pursue pro-
jects that have been a
benefit to the produc-
tivity of their farms,
and therefore benefits
the entire ag sector in
the province - which
in turn supports many
jobs and economic
activity in rural
Ontario."
The government
announced they would
be increasing the
amount available to
individual farmers for
the Tile Loan Program,
and that it would be at
a more competitive
interest rate than what
is currently being
offered.
Whyte questioned this
as a true benefit, say-
ing "it doesn't offset
the loss of the
Municipal Outlet Drain
program."
FARM BRIEF
Capturing market opportunities
There's a five-year, $255 million program to help
ensure Canada's agriculture and agri-food sector
is positioned to plan for the future and capture
market opportunities.
The Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri -
Food (ACAAF) Program will provide stakeholders
the means to identify and address current and
emerging issues. The ACAAF will continue the
CARD fund's cooperative contributions to projects
at the national, multi-regional and regional level
that will help advance the Canadian sector.
National initiatives will be delivered by national
industry organizations while the 14 industry -led
councils across Canada will continue to deliver ini-
tiatives at the provincial and territorial level.
Details on how to apply, as well as downloadable
electronic versions of the application form, and
contact information for the industry -led councils
have been posted at www.agr.gc.ca/acaaf.
