Mike Bullard, MC for the Ilderton Walk is shown
with Pat Hodgins, community champion. Hodgins
has raised a very Targe amount of money for the

MIDDLESEX-ELGIN—On Aug. 29, broadcast personal-
ity Mike Bullard will join local celebrities Ross Daily and
Suzy Burge, and performers Holly and the Walk -n
Rollers, the St. Thomas Hi-Ro Shrine Club, Bill
Farquhar, Tim Fischer and Jamie Prokop, with the
Q97.5 and BX93 summer cruisers, for a fun -filled family
day to support VON Middlesex -Elgin homecare and
community programs. The fifth annual VON Middlesex -
Elgin Great Community Walk takes place Sun., Aug. 29
at 9:30 a.m., with seven scenic walk routes featured this
year and two great family pork barbeques in the after-
noon.
"This is a family event for all ages," says Jackie Wells,
Manager of Volunteer and Community Development in
Middlesex. "Our Walk has something for everyone.
Recreation, entertainment, great food, and most of all,
tremendous community spirit. The Great Community
Walk is about what VON is about, family and communi-
ty. It's unlike other events because we don't focus on
one disease or program, but on healthier, independent
living for people of all ages. Over the past four years we
have raised more than a quarter million dollars to sup-
port homecare and community services."
Starting at 9:30 a.m., walkers will travel 2 km, 5 km,
or 10 km routes from Dorchester Community Centre,
Ilderton Curling Club, Longwood Road Conservation
Area in Mt. Brydges, Parkhill's Coronation Park, the
Strathroy Seniors' Centre, Springwater Conservation
Area near Aylmer and St. Thomas' Pinafore Park.
Celebration barbeques following the Walk highlight
the afternoon at Springwater Conservation Area and
Poplar Hill Park. "The barbeques themselves really
underscore the amazing community spirit of this event,"
says Wells. "Pigs that provide the pork roasts and
sausages are donated by area farmers, processed by
local abattoirs and prepared by area cooks. All the ser-
vices are donated, which allows us to direct all the pro-
ceeds toward vital VON services needed in each commu-
nity..
Farmers who have generously donated pigs are Eddy
Hessels of Premium Pork Canada in Ilderton; Mona and
Dwayne Ritchie in Parkhill; Debbie and Hi Thompson in
Lucan; Norma and Alan Wright of Wright's Seed &
Feeder Service in Ailsa Craig; John and Enid Gough in
Mt. Brydges; Yorkland Farms Ltd. in St. Thomas; and
the Knights of Columbus Aylmer Council 4189 in
Aylmer. Abattoirs are Ralph Bos Meats in Strathroy;
Les's Country Meats in Ailsa Craig; Darling's Food
Market in Exeter; Springwater Packers near Aylmer.
The cooks are On The Que BBQ Catering in Lucan;
Skiffington Catering of Strathroy; Glen Phillips in
Denfield; Braxton's in St. Thomas; and the Belmont

ing across the counties: local volunteer firefighters, girl
