Zurich Bean Festival looking for volunteers
By Carmel Sweeney
ZURICH CORRESPONDENT
ZURICH - A Smith family reunion was held recently at
the home of Trudy and Bob Smith of RR 1, Dashwood. A
reunion for the Creces relatives was held the following
day.
A free bus will be going to the Bank of Montreal in
Hensall on Fri., July 30 leaving from the Blue Water
Rest Home at 9:15 a.m. and picking up those in Zurich
at the corner of the Hay Mutual Insurance office at 9:30
a.m.
The 140th anniversary of the Zurich Fair was once
again a big success. Thank you to all those who worked
so hard to put everything together. Especially, president
Paul and Heather Klopp and secretary/treasurer
Margaret and Claire Deichert. Plus, all those who took
care of various committees and programs to make it all
happen.
There was a good turnout for the activities, dance and
Lions Club elimination draw. The lucky winner was Bob
Forrester of RR 2, Zurich. The baby show was great—
there were 19 entries this year. Thanks to Cathy and
Bonnie for all their help and also to the Hensall ambas-
sador Lindsay Allen. Many enjoyed the children's games
and the tractor pull. The horse show had a good atten-
dance. On Sunday, the fiddlers' jamboree had everyone
up dancing all afternoon. Supper followed in the audito-
rium. Sunday evening, roller skating\blading on the ice
surface cement floor drew a big turnout of all ages.
Everyone was rocking to the tunes and having a lot of
fun.
The volunteer appreciation get-together and potluck
supper will be held at the Zurich Park Pavilion on
Thurs., Aug. 5 at 6:30 p.m. for all those who helped out
at the fair in any way. Those in charge of events are to
call and invite their helpers to supper that night.
Don't forget to come out to the ladies auxiliary meeting
and program at the Blue Water Rest Home Tues., Aug. 3
at 6:30 p.m.
Happy birthday wishes to Maddy Smith on July 25.
A good time was had by all those who helped Rose
Marie Regier celebrate her 70th birthday on July 24 by
going to the Huron Country Playhouse in the afternoon
followed by dinner at her home. About 45 relatives
(which included all her daughters and daughters-in-law,
granddaughters, nieces and sisters-in-law) and a few
friends attended.
The annual Dan Bedard Memorial Golf Tournament
was held recently at the Bayview Golf Course with a very
good attendance. After golfing, a get-together and bar-
becue was held at the cottage of his parents Corky and
Shirley Bedard of Bayview Subdivision. Everyone
enjoyed the music and there was fun for all.
The Exeter Horseback Saddle Club would like to say
"Good Luck" to the 12 riders representing their club in
Paris, Ontario at the Youth Team Challenge on July 31
and Aug. 1.
The 12th annual wild women's weekend was held this
past weekend at the home of Jean Leng at the lake on
the Blue Water Highway. Mothers and daughters
enjoyed visiting, going to the beach, eating at JD's
Bayfield and going to the Flea Market.
Recently Mel and Patricia Messaros of Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan spent some time in the area with Earl
and Ruth Ann Flaxbard. They attended a pig roast host-
ed by Richard and Mary Erb. All the Erb cousins attend-
ed along with Don and Barb Messaros of Don Mills.
Some also went to see the Patsy Cline show at the
Playhouse.
Bob and Linda Hendrick travelled to LaFontaine,
Ontario on July 17 to attend the wedding of Darcy Scott
and Heidi Dorian. Darcy is the son of Allen and the late
Rose Mary Scott formerly of Zurich. Darcy is a mechanic
with the Canadian Armed Forces and has returned to
Camp Borden for additional training. The couple are
planning to attend the Zurich Bean Festival. After his
training, they will be living in Edmonton.
Karl and Mary Regier have returned home from a two
month's holiday visiting many places and going as far as
Alaska.

Large snake seen by
several residents
SOUTH HURON — Several residents of Oakwood Park
in South Huron reported to police that they observed a
large snake in the neighborhood.
The snake was described as approximately four feet in
length, about four inches in diameter and black with
diamond like patterns on its head. It was reported as
being aggressive at times and would flatten its head out
when approached. Although the type of snake is
unknown at this time residents believe it might be an
escaped pet — possibly a puff adder.
If anyone sees this snake or has any information about
it, call Huron OPP. Police warn citizens not to approach
it too closely.
helpers Wed., Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. to clean the bean kitchen
and get it ready for the big day on Aug. 28.
The chicken barbecue at the Mennonite Church was a

were among a group who spent a week in old Quebec
City recently. The trip was organized by Dennis and
