Old-fashioned breakfast atVarna complex
By Joan Beierling
VARNA CORRESPONDENT
VARNA-Varna's Garden and House Tour was held on
Saturday and Sunday. A big thank -you to Sylvia and
George Louch for arranging the tour. Sylvia spent
many hours working on the project as well as in her
own beautiful garden and showing her home also.
Floyd McAsh worked very hard researching the his-
tory of each home in Varna. George Louch and Kaitlin
Harris posted the individual histories in
front of each home (thank you to them).
This made it very interesting for many as they walked
through the village. These signs were picked up again
and will be out for the 'Open the Door in 2004' on July
30, July 31 and Aug. 1 weekend --Varna is celebrating
150 Years.
While browsing through the gardens and homes,
there were several doors decorated that were to be
judged by the ones on the tour. A door was donated by
Dave and Marg Miller (D&D Glass) and the winner won
the door. Thank you to Dave and Marg for this gener-
ous donation. The owner of this door now is (yours
truly) Joan and Wayne Beierling.
A big thank -you to all who took part in this tour, to
all who showed their garden home and also to those
who supported it.
A potluck supper was held at the pavilion at the
Complex at 6 p.m. for all Varna residents and
Sesquicentennial committee members. A delicious sup-
per was enjoyed and a meeting was held.
The door will be opened at 7 p.m. on Friday evening
with a garden party at the Magnolia Manor Bed and
Breakfast. You may register there. There will be pens
to purchase at $2 each or beautiful pins for $4 in
advance and $5 that weekend. The pens and pins can
be purchased now at Varna Country Store.
Elly Van Bergen is in charge of the quilt display and
anyone with a quilt to display is asked to pick up a
form at the Varna Country Store and have info about
the quilt to Van Bergen by July 26.
Saturday morning from 8 to 10 a.m. there will be an
old-fashioned breakfast at the Complex. The parade
will follow at 11 a.m.; please pick up reg-
istration forms at Varna Country Store or
call 233-5350 as soon as possible if you wish to enter.
There will be an antique tractor and antique car
show on both days as well as a school reunion. There
will be many events for both young and old. Travelling
golf will be enjoyed as well as scavenger hunts, old-
fashioned games and craft stations. Saturday night a
BX 93 dance will take place at the Bayfield Arena.
Advance tickets are available for $10 and tickets at the
door are $12. Tickets are available at Varna Country
Store.
A church service will be held Sunday morning at 11
a.m. with guest speaker Kevin Stewart. A fish fry will
be held Sunday evening at the Complex. For tickets
call 565-5455, 233-7443 or 233-9153. They are $12.
The beard judging will follow the supper. Tickets are
available for the quilt draw until approximately 3 p.m.
Saturday when the draw will be made. A celebrity ball
game will be enjoyed Friday evening at 9 p.m. at the
Varna ball diamond.

gospel -style worship. Sun., July 18 church will be in

Capsule Comments
by Ernie Miatello
At this time of year, we are often applying
sunscreen and DEET insect repellents on our skin
on the same day. It's best to separate each
application by about 30 minutes to reduce any
skin rash side effects of the insect repellent.
It is better to breath in through your nose than your mouth. Your
nose filters, moisturizes and warms the air before it goes to the
lungs. Use your mouth for exhaling, food and talking.
"Aerobic" means with air. When you exercise, your heart and lungs
are using oxygen as efficiently as possible. This strengthens your
cardiovascular system. The key concept of aerobic exercise is not
how hard you exercise but how long and how often you do it.
Our skin ages in two ways; one is chronological aging which is an
inherited tendency to age and that we have no control over. The
other is photo -aging or sun -induced aging resulting from sun
damage to the s dn. You can't do much about the former but you
can certainly slow down the latter. Use your sunscreen.
