Sibling Rivalry to compete in fiddle and stepdance championships
By Mary Simmons
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
TAVISTOCK — The
members of Sibling
Rivalry will be heading to
Tavistock this weekend to
compete in the 21st
Annual Southwestern
Ontario Open Fiddle and
Stepdance Championships.
The group includes 12 -
year -old Sarah Van Allen,
14 -year-old Tyler Van
Allen, nine-year-old Kyle
Waymouth and 14 -year-
old Kurtis Waymouth.
Tyler and Sarah have
an older sister, Rachel,
who is also actively
involved in step dancing
and has a great interest
in music.
The Van Allen children,
who live in Crosshill, are
the grandchildren of
Exeter resident Margaret
Stewart and her late hus-
band, Floyd, who had an
active interest in fiddling
and step dancing.
"This likely accounts for
their natural ability," says
their mother, Donna.
Tyler, Sarah and Kurtis
have been dancing
together for seven years
and were joined by Kyle
three years ago, taking
lessons at Judy's School of
Dance in Stratford.
Sarah and Tyler have
been dancing for eight
years while Kurtis has
been dancing for 11 years
and Kyle for six.
They all play the fiddle
and enjoy dancing at
retirement homes and
community and school
events.
They all say they enjoy
attending competitions,
meeting new friends and
camping out at events.
Kurtis says he enjoys
seeing how the elderly
enjoy the entertainment.
Sarah and Kurtis also
teach part-time at Judy's
School of Dance.
The boys admit they are
sometimes teased by
other boys who ridicule
them until they see them
dance — then they are
impressed.
"Many girls are
impressed and want to
learn to step," Sarah says.
"Once they try to learn,
they understand how dif-
ficult it is."
The competition runs
July 2-3 at the Tavistock
and District Recreation
Centre.
Camping is available
from June 30 to July 5 at
the Fiddle Park for $15 a
night or $70 for the whole
time if pre -registered and
