Exeter Juniors split doubleheader
EXETER — The Exeter Junior's
bats came alive in the first game of
a double header Sunday afternoon
against Ingersoll with a 12-
2 win.
Ingersoll took the lead
after the first two innings off
starter Terry Hogg.
However, Hogg settled
down and kept the Juniors
in the game until the bottom
of the third when Exeter
scored four runs.
Hogg singled and scored
when Gingerich belted his
second home run of the
season over the right field
fence.
This opened the floodgates as
Exeter scored 10 more runs over
the next three innings.
Tim Meidinger and Steve Regier
scored in the same inning off a
hard-hit single by Mark Laye.
Exeter padded their lead in the
fourth inning when Steve Regier,
Gingerich and Meidinger scored on
another hit by Mark Laye.
In the fifth inning Hogg reached
first with a single while and he and
Ricky Regier both scored off of a sin-
gle by Meidinger.
Jon Brand was the mercy run in
the sixth inning as he reached sec-
ond with a hard-hit ball over the
centre fielders head.
He then reached third on a sacri-
fice bunt by Hogg and scored on a
wild pitch.
Terry Hogg pitched five solid
innings allowing two runs on four
hits, two walks and had six strike
outs.
"I really liked the way Terry bat-
tled out there today," said
Exeter manager Jeff Keller.
The story of the game was
Dave Gingerich, continuing
to hit the ball well.
Gingerich had two hits,
one of which was his home
run and had three RBI's.
Hogg added two singles of
his own, Jon Brand a dou-
ble and Meidinger adding a
single. The defense commit-
ted just one error.
Game 2: Exeter 4
Ingersoll 5
The second game was different
than the first.
"You could tell they really wanted
to get that first game back."
It was a pitchers battle up until the
third inning Jon Brand got the
start, once again pitching well.
However,Ingersoll scored their
first run off of some good execution
and two key hits in their half of the
third inning.
Brand left the game after the third
inning allowing just one run on four
hits, no walks and four strikeouts.
The story of the game was relief
pitcher Shawn Morgan, who came
in the game to pitch in the fourth
inning.
Morgan is just 15 and plays for the
Exeter Bantam team.
"I called him up on Saturday
thinking I may need an extra arm
Dave
Gingerich
for the double header. I was going
to have him pitch one inning to give
some of my regular guys a break.
He went a couple more than that."
Morgan went two complete
innings before he was replaced in
the sixth inning. He allowed two
runs on three hits and no walks and
four strike outs.
Meidinger replaced Morgan in the
sixth inning with men on first and
second with none out.
Meidinger stepped up with a strike
out, pop up to short and another
strike out to get out of the inning
with the score tied 3 - 3.
With Laye reaching on a walk and
Gingerich, Schroeder and Meidinger
all reaching on a singles, Morgan
belted a single over the second
baseman's head to tie the game up.
"This kid impresses me I can't
wait for him to play full-time for
me," said Keller.
The seventh inning was the inning
Exeter wished they could play over.
Ingersoll scored two runs in three
hits.
Exeter's defence made a couple of
mistakes as Ingersoll took a two -run
lead going into the bottom of the
seventh.
Schroeder's double to lead off the
inning, and later scoring on a hit by
Meidinger was all they could do as
they fell short 5 - 4.
Exeter's next home game is
Sunday at 5 p.m., at Alvin Willert
Field when they take on first -place
Oakridge.
Crediton juniors notch fifth straight win
CREDITON - With another win under its belt, the
Crediton junior girls ball team continued
its winning streak to five games.
Heading down to Oneida to play the
Oneida Intermediate team, the team came
home with a win after strong third and
sixth innings
The local squad took the lead in the third
inning scoring five runs. Oneida came
roaring back in the third and fourth inning
to tie the game until Crediton's bats came
alive again in the sixth inning
Annette Grotentraast played strong
defensively with aggressive fielding.
Kelli Fulton led her team at the plate Janelle
with three singles, one being a perfectly Dykstra
placed bunt. Katelyn Squire was strong at
the plate with a triple and double. Doubles
came from the bats of Megan Preszcator
and Kerri Fulton. Jessica Davies added two
singles and single hits came from the bats
of Jessica Bray, Janelle Dykstra, Carrie
Dixon and Annette Grotentraast.
Starting pitcher Carie Pertschy notched
two strikeouts with strong relief from
Dixon also with two strikeouts.
Manager Casey Cyr's 'star of the game'
selection was Kelli Fulton for snagging line
drives and hard hit grounders at third
base.
Crediton 1 1 vs
Oneida Smoke 7
The Crediton junior girls fastball team won its
fourth game in a row defeating Oneida
Smoke by a score of 11-7 last week .
The game was a very fast -paced one with
only one run apiece in the fourth inning,
both scoring runs in the fifth with Crediton
in the lead by a score of 6 to 5. In the sixth
inning, Crediton kept their bats alive by
scoring four more runs and one more
insurance run in the seventh to seal the
win.
Crediton struggled with Oneida's strong
pitcher, with 10 strikeouts in the first four
innings
In the fifth, the local squad settled down
and had some key hits. Strong defensive
plays throughout the whole game was the
key to Crediton's win with two double
plays throughout the night.
Janelle Dykstra and Kerri Fulton led
their team at the plate with a triple and
two singles apiece.
Kelli Fulton added two singles while
Amber Preszcator belted out a home run
in the sixth inning to score two runs.
Jessica Davies hit a double in the first
inning but was left stranded. Single hits
came from the bats of Nikki Cyr, Carrie
Dixon, Margaret Geurts and Jessica Bray.
Nikki Cyr was very strong in the infield
grabbing a hard-hit line drive and turning a per-
fect double play.
Carrie Dixon pitched the first five innings until a
injury occurred with strong relief from Jessica
Bray who notched two back-to-back strikeouts in
the seventh inning to end the game.
The juniors head to London on Thursday night to
play first -place team South Juniors and are back
home on Tues., July 6 at 9 p.m.
