Skeet shooting champ
OSHAWA — Jenifer Holmes returned home from
the Canadian Open Skeet Shooting Championships
in Oshawa June 18-20 a big winner.
Holmes dominated the Ladies Division by winning
three first place medals and four runner ups in the
seven events.
Her first place medals included Canadian Ladies
Doubles Champion, Canadian 20 Gauge Champion
and the top title, Canadian Ladies High All Around
champion.
The High All Around event comprised 500 targets,
100 each in 12 gauge, 20, 28 gauge, 410 and dou-
bles.
The 2004 championship shoot took place at the
Oshawa Gun Club with a full field of 75 shooters
from seven Canadian provinces and three U.S.
states.
The shooting conditions were some of the worst in
the shoot's history.
Although there was no rain during the shooting,
gale force winds with gusts up to 110 km/h kept up
throughout most of the three-day shoot.
In addition to her Lady Division wins, Holmes also
won several Open Class titles and medals including
the 400 Target High Overall Event.
Rangers win
ZURICH — The Zurich
Rangers won two games
over the weekend to even
their record at five
wins and five loss-
es.
On Friday, the
Rangers defeated
the Goderich
Gators 8-2.
The Gators
scored two runs in
the first inning,
but Zurich later
scored eight
unanswered runs
for the victory.
Chris DeGroot led the
offence with four hits and
three runs batted in.
Dennis Gower shut out
Goderich over 6 2/3
0
innings with 18 strikeouts.
On Sunday, the Rangers
hosted the Wroxeter
Rippers.
Zurich fell
behind again 2-0
in the first inning,
but would rally to
score nine runs in
five innings for the
victory.
Dwayne LaPorte
pitched a complete
game for the vic-
tory and carried
the offense with a
home run and five
runs batted in.
The Rangers play next in
Goderich on Sunday at
2:30 p.m.

Zurich minor hockey
ZURICH — "We're
looking forward to it get-
ting cold again."
Not many people may
be wishing for cold
weather right around
Canada's birthday except
for the Zurich Minor
Hockey Association.
With the brand new
Bluewater Community
Centre that has an NHL
size ice surface, presi-
dent Brian Brooks says
they are excited about
the 2004/2005 season
and looking forward to
playing in the new facili-
ty that has six dressing
rooms.
Registration for Zurich
Minor hockey will take
place July 8 from 7-9
p.m. and July 10 from 9-
11 a.m.
A hockey school will be
running at the Zurich
complex from Sept. 6-10
for three groups.
There will an up to age
nine division, a 10 and
11 division and a 12 and
over division.
There is a maximum
amount of 25 entrants
and two goalies per class
and the instructor will be
Don Rumsey from The
Edge.

Shinny hockey will also
be run Saturday morn-
ings for at least 20
weeks.
A skills session will be
run for the first part of
the session with a scrim-
mage for the second
part. Full equipment is
required.
Zurich Minor hockey
players may sign up as
well as any other youths
not currently playing
hockey and there will be
no travel involved.

LONDON — The Exeter
Fury travelled to London
Saturday to face third
place America.
Exeter controlled the
play in the first half, but
were unsuccessful in tak-
ing the lead.
Pete Fragiskatos came
close with a long shot, but
the American keeper got
his fingertips on the ball
to keep it out of the net.
The second half began
with play in both ends of
the field, but Exeter once
again couldn't capitalize
on its chances.
