LIFETIME INTRODUCES... *NEW PRODUCT !!!* Bluewater emergency -plan exercise By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF ZURICH — Staff of Bluewater Municipality were faced with a series of emergencies June 16 after a tornado cut across the area, but all were part of a half day table top exercise designed to test the emergency management plan of the municipality. Representatives of social services, Festival Hydro, Zurich Fire services, Huron OPP and municipality support staff were at the Bluewater Community Centre and Arena (Zurich Complex) for the exercise. Also present were members of the municipality's senior management team including Mayor Bill Dowson, who went through the process of dealing with situations as they occurred throughout the morning. Before the start of the simulation, it was made clear the exercise was a test of the plan not the participants. Huron County Emergency Management Co-ordi- nator Gary Wood said, "there will be mistakes and that is what we are here for." During the morning staff faced a series of prob- lems including power outages and water short- ages, survivors trapped in rubble, setting up com- mand posts, dealing with volunteers coming for- ward to help and requests for information from the media. With the conclusion of the exercise, personnel June picnic enjoyed by all Submitted by Donna Webster EXETER - Caven Presbyterian Church women held their June picnic at the cottage of Mr. and Mrs. John McNeilly. Emergency Medical services staff said there would be a longer response time due to roads clo- sures as well as not having air support available. Dowson said the exercises were always a learn- ing experience and the municipality has a long way to go. He felt the exercises should be done more regu- larly than they are now. Dowson added that it was small unexpected things that often frustrated people trying to recov- er from an emergency the most, such as dumps not being open extra hours for people to get rid of debris. Rick Peters from the Emergency Management Office, said the event was well organized. "Everybody learns a lot in a few hours and it goes a long way. It was a very effective exercise." et Your Tickets Now! 4. ft1; r 1 presents LEAHY, Sunday, July 4, 2004 DOORS OPEN AT 2:00 P.M. • SHOW STARTS AT 3 P.M.
