Juniors defeat Sarnia 5-4
EXETER — Last -inning
heroics salvaged
the win for the
W&K/CO-OP
Juniors Sunday
night as key hit-
ting provided the
punch Exeter
needed to defeat
Sarnia at home
Sunday night.
Jon Brand got
the start for
Exeter. Sarnia
scored two runs
in the first inning on three
hits.
"They really hit the ball
well and executed well on
the base paths. They are
a quick team", said Exeter
manager Jeff Keller.
However, Brand settled
down for the next four
innings and allowed just
one more run in the fifth
inning.
"Jon continues to throw
well. He lets the defence
get involved. As I men-
tioned before, we have a
very strong defensive
team. Jon knows that. He
just throws strikes. He has
the confidence that the
guys behind him will come
through. He is also great
at choosing his pitch loca-
tion. If they get a hit, it is
rarely anything more than
a single."
Over five complete
innings, Brand allowed
three runs on eight hits
and just one
walk.
Exeter
responded to
Sarnia's two -
run first inning
by scoring
three of their
own in the sec-
ond inning.
Ricky Regier
reached first
base on a walk,
reached second
on a single by Everett
Dionne.
Steve Regier loaded the
bases with a walk as well.
Jon Brand, helping his
own cause, hit a double
scoring Rick Regier and
Dionne.
Steve Regier later scored
on a sacrifice hit by Terry
Hogg.
"The guys really execut-
ed well and took advan-
tage of every step. Third
base coach Mike Seip was
agressive on the base
paths, which really
worked out well for us".
Tim Meidinger came in
to pitch in the sixth inning
with Exeter leading 4 - 3.
He shut the door on
Sarnia in the sixth inning.
However, in the top of the
seventh, a double scored
the tying run for Sarnia.
With the score tied at 4 -
4, Exeter came up in the
Jon
Brand
bottom of the seventh
looking for the win.
"You could tell they just
wanted that win in the
worst way. They were
pumped," said Keller.
With two out, Meidinger,
looking to be the winning
pitcher of record, hit a
line -drive single up the
middle.
Then, rookie sensation
Steve Regier came up the
plate and cracked a dou-
ble over the left -fielder's
head.
Coach Seip sent
Meidinger around third
knowing it was going to be
a close play at the plate.
However, Meidinger beat
the throw to the plate and
slid under the cathers
glove to score the winning
run.
"It was a great way to
end the game. Everyone
loves to see a game get
this close and come down
to the last play. Even the
Sarnia fans were cheering
as the game ended."
The Juniors have had a
light schedule this month.
However, things get busy
starting this Sunday when
they open up a double-
header in Exeter against
Ingersoll at 3 p.m with the
second game starting at
5:30 p.m.

Exeter Public was the overall winning school for Grade 6 in the Techno Challenge recently held in Seaforth
with participants from the Grade 7 and 8 classes also competing.Twelve schools and 65 students were in the
Grade 6 division and first had a catapult challenge where they had to hit a target 25 feet away before shooting
for distance with the longest shot 52 feet. In the electric car challenge students used gears or pulleys and a
battery to power a home-made chassis. The win earns the Grade 7 class a robotic arm workshop next year. In
the Grade 7 and 8 division Gavin Harburn and David Wagler designed and tested a swamp boat. Tim
Thornton, Samm Christie and Wagler were involved in designing and constructing a crane while Emily
Desjardine, Leanne Hoffman and Liz Case were involved in a triathlon that lasted the entire day. Back L -R: Jay
