With four strikeouts in the first three innings, the local squad found its confi- dence at the plate while playing some excellent defen- sive plays throughout the whole game. Jessica Davies played a very steady position at shortstop with clean plays and catches. Jessica Bray also played her fielding position superbly catch- ing tough fly balls. Amber Preszcator led her team at the plate with a double and two singles. Davies and Bray both pounded out triples and Grand Bend Speedway Results of the Friday night race at Grand bend Speedway, sponsored by Coco Cola were: Heat races Jr Micro Sprints: Heat 1 #22 Kyle Cody 2# 23 Greg Dadson Jr. B 1 #82Kate Vanderhoek 2# 31 Jamie Hamilton Jr. A #1 35 Nathan Wray #2 99 Matt Koricina Mini Trucks #72 Shawn Thompson 13 H.P. #8 Mitch Stutt Ladies #04 Lori Martin Mini Sprints 1 #4 Josh Ackworth 2#3 Mitch Stutt Feature Races Micro Sprints Jr. C 1#32 Braden Bosman 2nd #91 Zack Vincent 3rd # 21 Nicholas Cable Jr. B 1 #82 Kate Vanderhoek 2 #54 Jonah Macko 3# 8 Dale Arnott Jr. A 1 #11Jason Martin 2#99 Matt Koricina 3# Jamie Marche Mini Truck 1#35 Louis Desjardine 2#72 Shawn Thompson 13 H.P 1 #54 Devon Limon 2 #3 Dale Allen 3# 46 Tim Rees Ladies 1#15 Christina Daikin 2#99 Michelle Koricina 3# 04 Lori Martin Mini Sprints 1#20 Darcy Stutt 2#3 Mitch Stutt 3#4 Josh Achworth added single hits. Bowlers came from as far away as Chesley, Tillsonberg, Goderich, Hanover, St. Marys, London, Fairmont and Elwood Clubs, Seaforth, Woodstock and Exeter. Teams from London Fairmont captured first, fifth and sixth while Chesley got second place, while Hanover took third - followed by St Marys in fourth. The consolation prize went to Shawn and Peter McFalls of Exeter with a high one game win of 1W46. Lucan pigeon racing LUCAN — It's an ill wind that blows nobody good. Pigeon racers know the truth of that saying. Recently nine members of the Lucan club shipped 106 pigeons to Belleville and a total of 129 to Cobourg. The Belleville birds were released at 6:15 a.m., and at 7:15 a.m. the "short" birds climbed into the Cobourg sky. On both occasions a strong east -south-east breeze was blowing. Pigeons are like air- craft: their speed is affected by head- or tail- winds. Aided by a strong tail- wind, the birds raced home in almost record time. It took Al de Haan's first pigeon four hours and 10 minutes to cover the 343 kilometres dis- tance from Belleville. Its average speed was 1,367 metres/min., good enough for first club. Jim Whitworth's birds shrugged off the extra 53 kilometres they have to their home in Forest; they placed second and third. Close behind were Norm Hardy's birds, who captured positions four, five and seven. Jos Veens from Arkona picked up positions six, eight and 12. Tom Hardy was pleased to see his birds take posi- tion nine. His uncle Jack Hardy was right behind him with position 10. A bit off the pace were birds flown by Todd McPherson, Jim Southern & Brendan Cunningham. The Cobourg birds returned practically at the same speed. The winning pigeon, owned by Jim Whitworth, flew the 330 kilometres distance in just over four hours for an average speed of 1,363 metres/min. Exeter's Al de Haan had two birds land at the same time. Calculations showed they placed sec- ond and third. Jus Veen's birds again showed strongly; they placed third and fourth. Thanks to electronic technology, Norm Hardy clocked three pigeons split seconds apart. They placed sixth, sev- enth and eighth. Todd McPherson took the next two positions. Jack Hardy placed one bird in the middle of the racesheet. Bringing up the rear were birds belonging to Tom Hardy, Brendan Cunningham and Jim Southern. Kippen Gun Club ST. THOMAS — Several shooters from the Kippen Gun Club traveled to St. Thomas last weekend to participate in what could be classed as the first major trap shoot of the 2004 season. In Saturday's 200 singles event, Dan Crerar blasted a 198 to win the 'C' class and 50 boxes of shells. Jordan Ritchie in Sub Jr. made waste to 190 and earned 20 boxes of ammo. Sunday in the 50 pair of doubles events Brittany Caldwell won the ladies category with 83 and 10 boxes of shells. In Sub Jr. the handicap event at 19 1/2 yards Ritchie captured his sec- ond event in as many days with a 91 and 20 more boxes of shells. He then slammed an 87 in the doubles event to win his third event of the tour- nament and another 10 boxes of shells. Brad Mann was success- ful in 'C' class doubles with a score of 88 and 20 boxes of shells for efforts. Monday Wayne Peachy blasted a 97 in the singles for his first victory of the weekend and gained 20 boxes of shells for his efforts. The Kippen Gun Club congratulates all of these shooters on their fine efforts. 9-3 win for Rangers ZURICH — June 15, the Zurich Rangers played in Walton. Zurich bolted out to a 4-1 lead with four runs in the third inning. However, Walton later added two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game at 4- 4. The game went into extra innings with Walton squeezing out a 5- 4 victory. Craig Skinner had three hits in a losing cause. June 20, Zurich hosted Belmore. Belmore scored in the first inning to open up a 1-0 lead but Zurich rallied for seven runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead. Zurich added a couple more runs late in the game for a 9-3 victory. Dwayne LaPorte pitched a complete game for the victory. Zurich will host the Goderich Gators on Friday at 8:30 and the Wroxeter Rippers on Sunday. Dwayne LaPorte
