There are potential health and safety hazards in every workplace, including production lines, farms and even office settings. These hazards can include anything from slippery floors and poor posture while typing, to a sharp blade in a lawn tractor. Workers between the ages of 15 and 24 are twice as likely to be injured on the job than all others. Machine injuries and electro- cutions are among the leading causes of work-related deaths among youngzq people. It is important every employee be provided with prop- er training and that they are aware of the risks they will face at the job. It is equally important each employee take the necessary precautions to ensure their own safety. This includes following proper safety proce- dures, wearing the necessary safety equipment, and let- ting employers know of any potential health and safety hazards. It is crucial that youth, students and employers are made aware of their rights and responsibilities, and of the health and safety issues they face. Many accidents and injuries can be prevented with proper awareness, understanding and training. Under the Canada Labour Code, employees have three basic rights to protect themselves in the workplace. These rights are: • The right to know• Employees have the right to know about hazards in the workplace that could affect their safety and health. • The right to participate: An employee has the right to participate in the development and implementation of procedures that affect their health and safety. • The right to refuse dangerous work: Employees have the right to refuse to do a job if they have reason- able cause to believe there is a condition at work that is a danger to them, or if the use of a machine or item at work presents a danger to them or to a co-worker. Observation, learning, and experience are crucial to recognizing potential safety hazards in the workplace. Make sure you follow all safety precautions, ask about safety hazards and know how to use personal safety equipment. Visit the Exeter Human Resource Centre of Canada for Students (HRCC-S) to learn about your responsibilities as an employee, and your employer's responsibilities around health and safety practices in the workplace.
