DASHWOOD — "They
just shook them until they
were dead and then
moved onto the next one."
That's how Dashwood
resident Andy Van Altena
describes what happened
to his flock of chickens and
turkeys when dogs
attacked Sunday night.
Van Altena lost all 100
chickens and 10 turkeys to
the dogs which knocked in
the screens covering the
coop.
The loss is estimated at
$1,400 for the chickens
and $60 apiece for the
turkeys and may not be
covered by insurance,
according to Van Altena.
The attack was found
Monday morning by Van
Altena, who didn't hear
anything during the night.
The owner said he has
seen tracks around before
when the dogs tried to get
in, "but they were deter-
mined this time."
It was a double loss for
Van Altena, who is getting
married in August and
said the chickens were to
feed 200 people.
Police are investigating.

If our community seems like a happier place these days,
you're right. In this year's Tim Hortons Earn A Bike
program, kids worked together with community
partners to help where it was needed most. The kids
learned a great lesson in teamwork and responsibility.
After all their hard work, they were each rewarded
with a brand new bike. And a brand new appreciation
for the place we all call home.
