Pastor Elly Van Bergen gave the welcome YARN a n d announcements as well as the Call to Worship. Sharon Chuter clerk of the session was called upon to present the young girls for confirma- tion, a renewal of bap- tismal faith. They were Stacey Consitt, daughter of Scott and Brenda Consitt, Alysha and Jayme Dowson daughters of John and Gayle Dowson and Genelle Reid daughter of Doug and Joanne Reid. There was also a pre- sentation of new mem- bers by transfer to Goshen Church. Steve Keys welcomed Carolyn Thompson and her hus- band John in Bluewater Resthome in Zurich. The choir then favoured everyone with their gift of music Be Not Afraid. Scripture readings were presented by Genelle Reid, Jayme Dowson, Stacey Consitt and Alysha Dowson. The four girls then asked questions about the United Church crest. The celebration of communion then took place and the four girls that were confirmed served the bread and wine. Anna Keys and Deb Rathwell came forward and presented Elly Van Bergen with her life membership for the UCW which was a complete surprise for Van Bergen. Pastor Van Bergen gave the Commissioning and the Blessing. Helen Roberts con- ducted the business por- tion for leader Marian Dougall who was absent. Rev. Paul Ross showed a film of Beads of Hope (with Stephen Lewis as commentator). Roberts and her group conducted the worship service. The theme was 'What Do You See' comparing the scien- tist's, historian's, accoun- tant's, theologian's, Noah's and Mary Magdalene's different views of what they visual- ized. Ida McBride read the Scripture. Readings were given by Mary Baechler and Roberts. Hymns were sung. Leona Hern and her group served lunch. tickets left for the June 16 church pork barbe- cue. Sun., June 20 plan to attend Elly V a n Bergen's 50th birthday Celebration- Benefit Concert at 2 p.m. in the Varna Complex. Eduard Klaasen will be there with his Paraguayan Harpist and also Boy Heywood. Van Bergen's wish is for absolutely no cards or gifts. Instead a donation can be donated to HIV/AIDS Beads of Hope. There will be cake and ice cream following the concert. Everyone is welcome. Bayfield Cemetery Decoration Day is June 27. Congratulations to Linda and Bill Linfield on the birth of their new grandson. The community's sin- cere sympathy goes out to Ralph and Mona Stephenson and family on the sudden passing of Ralph's sister-in-law Joan Stephenson, wife of Ivan in Mississauga. Congratulations to Cara Stephenson on placing in the top six at the compe- tition at Steelback in London. Stephenson goes on to the New PL on June 18, 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Good luck Stephenson; if she wins she will get $10,000. Looking ahead, the Varna Garden Tours are on Sat., July 10 and Sun., July 11. This is a kick-off for the Varna Opens the Door in 2004! Please mark your calendar. There will be yard sales and more. Keep marking your cal- endar for the big week- end of July 30, 31 and Aug. 1 in Varna. Lots of excitement for both young and old! This starts Friday night with the garden party at the Magnolia Manor Bed and Breakfast where there will be local entertain- ment. All may register there for the weekend and this follows up with a celebrity ball game at the Complex at 9 p.m. A old- fashioned breakfast Saturday morning from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. with the parade to follow at 11 a.m. Anyone wanting to enter the parade please go to the Varna Country Store or phone 233-5351 for an entry form. Both Saturday afternoon and Sunday there will be an antique car show, antique tractor show, quilt show and school reunion. Saturday after- noon there will be travel- ing golf and a scavenger hunt. The BX 93 dance will be held Saturday evening but will be in Bayfield arena. A church service will be held at the Stanley Complex on Sunday at 11 a.m. Sunday afternoon children will enjoy craft stations and old-fash- ioned games. There will be a fish -fry from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Stanley Complex on Sunday. Tickets are out and you may get yours by calling 233-7443 or 233-9153. Plan to attend this week- end as there will be fun for everyone! If you have a quilt to display please pick up a form when you are out to church or contact Elly Van Bergen at 233-3110. The annual church pic- nic will be at the complex on July 25 with Exeter Community Band as guests. Varna UCW are going to dinner and theatre on Aug. 26. Dinner will be in Goshen Church prepared and served by Goshen women and then on to Grand Bend Playhouse to see A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline.
