Fury tie German -Canadians
EXETER — The Exeter Fury earned a
tie with the German -Canadians Sunday
after blowing a two -goal lead in the sec-
ond half.
A five minute lapse was all it took for
the visitors to tie the game up on a cou-
ple of quick goals.
The Fury played a strong first
half controlling the play and cre-
ating numerous scoring chances.
Fury keeper Nathan Holmes
made a nice save early on by
deflecting a shot over the bar to
keep the game scoreless until
the offence got started.
The first goal of the game was
a tremendous effort from
defender Joe Forrester.
After taking a pass from
Holmes in his own end, Forrester beat
his opponent and sent a ball up to Marty
DeBruyn.
Using his trademark speed to sprint
directly to the net, Forrester was in posi-
tion to receive a pass back from
DeBruyn and bury the shot into the back
of the net for his first goal in seven years
with the Fury.
The goal seemed to spark the Fury for
awhile but the Germans came back back
10 minutes later and scored after the
Fury defenders got crossed up in the
corner.
The crossed ball was sent into the box
and the play was finished off nicely for a
1-1 tie.
Exeter regained the lead shortly after
on another play by Pete Fragiskatos and
DeBruyn.
Fragiskatos gave Debruyn a ball to the
right of the net which DeBruyn chipped
over to Fragiskatos who was unable to
finish the play but who didn't stop work-
ing.
Regaining his footing, Fragiskatos in
turn chipped the ball back over to
DeBruyn who was waiting to head it into
the net for the 2-1 lead.
DeBruyn had an excellent chance to
earn his second goal of the game as he
was left alone with the keeper but fired
the shot right at the goaltender.
The third Fury goal of the half was
scored by DeBruyn from a good distance
out.
After taking a feed from
Andrew Prout, DeBruyn
notched his seventh goal of the
season by picking the corner on
a well-placed shot.
The Fury came out focused in
the second half to not let down
as had occurred in their previ-
ous games and it worked for a
few minutes.

The visitors started to apply
some pressure and it resulted in
a controversial goal as Holmes dove and
knocked a ball off the goal line only to
have the referee rule the play a goal for
the Germans.
The decision threw the Fury off their
game and it was only a minute after the
Germans came down and scored again
off a cross to tie the game.
The rest of the game neither team had
many good scoring opportunities as the
defence cleared the ball out of their end
whenever there was a slight bit of dan-
ger.
"We played well for 75 percent of the
game but we need a full 90 minutes,"
said Fury spokesman Jason McFalls.
"We have a lot of talent here but we
are not a mentally tough team yet. We
let bad calls affect how we play and we
have to learn how to handle that if we
expect to contend in this division,"
added McFalls.
The tie gives the Fury a record of 2-1-1
after playing their first four games at
home.
Exeter now heads on the road to take
on the London Portuguese Saturday at 7
p.m.

Crediton juniors lose close game
CREDITON - The Crediton junior girls'
fastball team lost a close 7-4 game to
the Oneida Smoke recently.
Crediton again played a very
strong game defensively but
seemed to struggle at the plate
with seven strikeouts through-
out the game. It seemed the
local squad couldn't get a rally
going stranding nine players
throughout the game.
Carrie Dixon led her team at
the plate with a double and two
singles. Jessica Bray pounded
out a triple in the final inning
after successfully reaching first
twice on walks. Margaret Geurts hit a
long fly ball to right field for a double
while single hits came from the
bats of Megan Preszcator,
Katelyn Squire, Amber
Preszcator, Jessica Davies,
Kerri Fulton, Nikki Cyr, Janelle
Dykstra and Kelli Fulton.
Dixon went the distance on
the mound notching seven
strikeouts.
The juniors played last night
in Crediton against the Byron
Blaze team and head to
Dorchester on Thursday night.
