(photo/Scott Nixon) POLICE BRIEFS Lottery scam LUCAN BIDDULPH — The OPP received reports from a number of residents in Middlesex County were notified they won more than $600,000 in the Spanish Lottery - El Gordo. The winners of the lottery all received notices by mail telling them to claim their prize money by forwarding bank account and other personal information to a fax number overseas. The first complainant, a resident of Lucan Biddulph, sought advice from his financial adviser, who advised him to contact the OPP. According to police, Phone Busters receives about 30 calls a week regarding this scam. The first stage of the swindle is for personal informa- tion, leading to identity theft. If a victim forwards their information, a fee is requested in order to collect the prize money. El Gordo is an actual Spanish Lottery, and does have an Internet -based game as well. All resi- dents are advised to call and ask questions of any prize they are offered and not to forward person- al information until the award checks out. Contact Phone Busters at 1-888-495-8501 to report a scam or visit the Web site at www.phone- busters. coin. FCapsule Comments by Ernie Miatello About 15% of diabetics develop ulcers on their feet. Careful regular inspection of the feet is a must for all diabetics. Some foot ulcers can occur repeatedly. A new type of surgery that lengthens the Achilles tendon can significantly reduce the recurrence of diabetic foot ulcers. Home treatment for warts includes the use of salicylic acid plasters cut to the size of the wart and reapplied every few days. This method cures about 75% of the warts. Taping the warts with adhesive or duct tape has been reported to help although it's slower to work. The banana cure is another: tape a piece of the smooth side of the banana skin to the wart and reapply a new piece of banana skin every morning. Supposed to take from 3-12 weeks to get rid of the wart. The kitchen sponge can be a source of bacterial contamination. This useful kitchen item traps minute food particles in it which can contaminate other kitchen items. Best advice is to rinse it after use, squeeze it out then pop it in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. The hot steam from the remaining water will disinfect the sponge. This is the allergyseason.
