Lake Huron ecological farm tour ZURICH — The Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario (EFAO) will try to educate the public about environmental- ly friendly farming when three ecologi- cal farms will open their doors to the public June 5 for an afternoon of farm tours and sharing. "Farm tours are a chance to see both the human and production side of eco- logical agriculture — the environmental- ly friendly way to farm," Fran McQuail, farm tour host and EFAO board mem- ber, says. An early afternoon tour in the Tiverton area takes place at Anbros Farm, owned by Lawrence and Mathilde Andres, who as pioneers of the ecological agriculture movement in Ontario, have been farm- ing organically since 1979. The Andres' farm 400 acres, have an 85 -cow dairy herd and market a full line of fluid milk products under the Harmony Organic label. Another feature of the Anbros Farm is their liquid manure system, a form of composting of liquid runoff from manure storage areas. The tour starts at 1 p.m. A concurrent tour takes place at Francis and Doreen Hartman's 200 -acre farm, located four miles south of Zurich. The Hartman farm is a small family - operated farm which has been certified organic since 1997. Their beef operation is made up of 25 head of cattle with calves. In keeping with organic prac- tices, the cattle are grazed on pasture. On a smaller scale, the Hartmans also produce maple syrup and raise sheep and pigs. The fmal stop of the tour is one of the first certified organic farms in Ontario, Meeting Place Organic Farm, owned and operated by McQuail and her husband, Tony, near Lucknow. It is a 100 -acre farm with a Community Supported Agriculture garden which produces veg- etables, herbs and cut flowers for 50 local families, mixed grain, an apple orchard and approximately 60 acres in perennial hay and pasture. The farm has a diverse livestock operation that includes cattle, sheep, Belgian draft horses and pigs. "Farm tours are a great way to get reconnected to where our food comes from and meet some of the wonderful families working the land," McQuail says. Following the tour, Meeting Place Organic Farm will host a barbecue with local, ecological food provided by Fieldgate Organics and local growers. There will be an opportunity to connect with other area ecological and organic farmers through displays and discus- sion. The cost for the barbecue will be $6.
