Huron Perth track and field
GODERICH - The Panthers track and
field team had a terrific day at the
Huron Perth Track and Field champi-
onships May 11 and 12.
Strong performances and personal
bests were the order of the meet, as the
team combined to place second overall
behind perennial powerhouse Madill.
Reid Ha'penny was one of the most
outstanding athletes.
Reid won the individual award as top
junior male athlete for his first place
finish in the 300 metre hurdles and his
two second place finishes in the 80
metre hurdles and the high jump.
He was also part of the wining 4 by
100 relay team.
Other top finishes were turned in by
Kylen VanOsch in the junior girls 300,
and 80 metre hurdles and by Melanie
McCann in the midget girls 3000 metre
race.
The Panthers dominated the 200
metres, winning three of the six races
and placing fourth in another.
Ashley Ralph won the senior girls
race, Tim Bilcke topped the midget
boys division and Aaron Neeb won the
junior boys race. Neeb captured the
100 metre title later in the day.
In the field events Mitch Homuth won
the senior boys high jump and Missy
Pertschy took the midget girls javelin
title.
South Huron also complied 17 second
place finishes and eight third place fin-
ishes.
By the time the meet ended, Panther
athletes had qualified for WOSSAA in
67 events.
Scott Ha'penny, who was one of seven
teachers who volunteered to coach this
year, said they were pleased with the
efforts of the athletes at Huron Perth
and their goal of bettering last year's
third place finish had been achieved.
It was especially good to finish only 23
points behind Madill in the boys overall
team division.

WOSSAA track and field competition
LONDON - May 19 and 20 were two
more terrific days for the Panther Track
and Field team as they participated in
the WOSSAA championships at TD
Waterhouse stadium in London.
The highlights over the two days
included Kylen VanOsch and Justine
Clarke finishing first and second in the
the junior girls 80 metre hurdles, and
the junior boys relay team capturing first
place in their 4 by 100 meter relay race.
Melanie McCann, proved once again
she is one of the top South Huron track
athletes by placing fourth in the junior
girls 800,1500 and 3000 metre races.
This qualifies her to compete at the
next level in all three events.
The coaches are looking forward to
seeing all seven of these athletes com-
pete at the OFSAA regional meet Friday
and Saturday at the same stadium in
London.
Clarke also qualified in the junior girls
high jump by placing fifth.
Other dual qualifiers included Chantal
Yearley, second in the midget girls high
jump and 80 metre hurdles and Tim
Bilcke, who was second in the midget
boys 200 metres and fifth in the high
jump,
Tyler Knip was third in the midget boys
triple jump and fifth in the 100 metres.
Reid Ha'penny was third in the junior
boys 300 metre hurdles and fourth in the
80 metre hurdles.
Other outstanding performances were
turned in by Kelly Cronyn, fifth in the
midget girls 300 metre hurdles, Melissa
Smith, fifth in the midget girls long jump,
and Sarah Watson, who was fourth in the
senior girls triple jump.
Justine Dionne was fifth in the junior
boys 400 metres.
These athletes also qualified for the
OFSAA Regional Meet in their respective
events.
All in all South Huron will be sending
13 competitors in 19 events which is one
of the largest contingents it has ever
sent.
The coaches would like to congratulate
not only these athletes, but all who par-
ticipated in the WOSSAA meet. They did
themselves and their school very proud.
