HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Times Advocate, 2004-05-26, Page 13Wednesday, May 26, 2004 Exeter Times -Advocate 13 POLICE BRIEFS Canine units search schools EXETER — Huron OPP on May 20, conducted searches of the high schools in the town's of Exeter and Goderich looking for illegal drug substances. The searches took place after seizures of cannabis marihuana had been made in and around the schools in the last few weeks. Six officers assisted by four canine units searched school lockers and classrooms. The Exeter school was searched in the morning with the Goderich School done in the afternoon. The canine units found three traces of illegal drug substances, which was acted upon and dealt with by school authorities. The traces of substances were found inside coats and a purse.In a fourth case a small amount of cannabis marihuana was located at the Goderich high school and a 16 -year-old male from the Goderich area has been charged with possession of controlled sub- stance cannabis marihuana. He will attend court in Goderich on July 8th. Vandalism incidents SOUTH HURON — Huron OPP has been busy responding to cases of vandalism in South Huron. On May 17 and May 18 six reports of damage took place in Huron Park and Exeter. On May 17 at 7:15 a.m. sometime overnight a per- son smashed the windshield, back and side window of a green Pontiac Grand Am. A fire extinguisher stolen from a local business was thrown through the win- dows causing extensive damage to the car. The vehi- cle had been parked in the driveway of a residence on St. Lawrence Ave. Later that morning at 10 a.m. an officer was called to Murray's Service Centre on Canada Ave to discover three vehicles left parked in the parking lot had been attacked. A red 1992 Pontiac Sunbird had the passen- ger window damaged while a burgundy four -door Buick had the rear window and the two side windows smashed. A white 1990 Honda Civic was kicked sever- al times on the driver's side leaving many dents plus the side mirror was snapped off. Then on May 18th five more reports of damage occurred. The fist call was received at 5:30 a.m. when an offi- cer was called to a Thames Road location over dam- age done to a vehicle. Someone took orange industrial paint and sprayed it over a black 1997 Chev Z71 pick- up truck sometime through the night. The second call that day came in at 6 a.m. when a person leaving for work found his vehicle damaged. Sometime through the night a two -door red Honda Civic parked in the family driveway on Columbia Drive had the passenger side window smashed and a pellet or BB gun shot out the front window. Tracks left the scene going across lawns coming out on Huron Park Road. Next at 8:15 a.m. another officer was called to a building on Quebec Ave where someone had spray - painted vulgar words and scenes on the wall using orange industrial paint. Then at 9 a.m. an officer was called to an industrial building on Thames Road to find someone had entered the property and sprayed blue industrial paint on an older vehicle and a barbecue. The next incident was reported at 10:15 a.m. when the principal of South Huron District High School located on Gidley Street reported school windows had been shot at, breaking the outer panes of a double thermal window. Damage indicates a BB or pellet gun was used to cause several windows to be damaged. Also on May 19 at 8:30 a.m. officers were called to a business on Canada Ave when company officials found several buildings sprayed painted with orange and blue industrial paint leaving graffiti requiring someone to wash them off using chemicals. Federal election local candidates EXETER — Canadians will go to the polls June 28 to pick a new leader after Prime Minister Paul Martin asked the gover- nor general to dissolve Parliament on Sunday. The election will be a test between several new leaders in their first federal elections, with Martin, NDP leader Jack Layton and Conservative Steven Harper all named as party leaders since the last federal election. Locally in the riding of Huron - Bruce, the elec- tion will be con- tested between incumbent Liberal Paul Gran Steckle, who Robert has held the riding for three terms, NDP candidate Grant Robertson, Conservative Barb Fisher and Christian Heritage candidate Dave Joslin. In Middlesex- Kent-Lambton three -term Liberal MP Rose -Marie Ur will face Conservative Bev Shipley, NDP member Kevin Blake and Green candidate Allan McKeown. In the new Perth -Wellington riding, five candidates will contest the election. Conservative Gary Schellenberger, who won a by-elec- tion last year by 1,000 votes, will face Liberal Brian Innes, NDP candi- date Robert Roth, Irma Devries from t the Christian son Heritage Party and Green Candidate Barb F leader isher John Cowling. There have been several changes to area ridings, with Huron -Bruce growing to the northeast with the addition of Brockton and South Bruce. P e r t h - Middlesex has become Perth Wellington, taking in Perth County and parts of north- ern Wellington County. Lambton- Kent-Middlesex is now Middlesex- Kent-Lambton, covering all of Lambton and Middlesex County except Thames Centre, Walpole Island and most of Chatham - Kent. Area ridings have been dominated by Liberal vic- Dave J oslin Paul Ste ckle tories for the past three elections under former Prime Minister John Chretien. The area had been held by the Progressive Conservatives under former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, which swept 11 seats in 1984. The Liberals broke through in 1988, winning the ridings of London East, Kent and Essex Kent under Chretien, before sweeping to power in 1993, winning all 11 ridings. The following election in 1997, with seats reduced from 11 to 10, the Liberals again swept the area, which they repeated in the 2000 campaign. Another step forward for `Jesse's Journey' Staff and students at South Huron District High School gave the Jesse's Journey Foundation a boost May 17 with a cheque for $1,231 raised from competition among classes and students at the school.Tied for the lead with the most money raised were Front L -R: Dan Triebner, Charles Lesperance, Robert Myers, J.B.
