Battle of the Bands planned for July
By Scott Nixon

SOUTH HURON — Council has no
objections to an Exeter Youth Centre
proposal to hold a Battle of the
Bands/Art in the Park fundraising
event July 31 at the MacNaughton
Park pavilion.
Exeter Youth Centre program ser-
vices leader Aness Symons spoke at
a South Huron council meeting May
17. She explained bands will start
playing at 1 p.m. with the finals
scheduled to be done by 9-9:30 p.m.
The event will be designed for
families and participating bands will
have to submit demo tapes before-
hand to show their music is appro-
priate for family listening. There will
be a $25 registration fee for partici-
pating bands to cover the estimated
$1,000-$1,200 in costs. The regis-
tration deadline for bands is June
30. Only 12 bands will be accepted
and bands must be independent.
Priority will be given to local bands.
The Art in the Park portion of the
fundraiser will go from 10 a.m. to 6
p.m. If artists register before June
30, there is a $35 fee for a 10' by 10'
display booth. Those registering
after June 30 will pay $50. The
deadline is July 16.
To encourage young artists, the
fee has been waived for artists
under 24.
Symons is also looking into adding
other activities for youngsters like
face painting and balloons.
As there is a potential noise con-
cern with neighbouring residents,
Symons told council she surveyed
110 homes in a two to three block
radius around MacNaughton Park.
She received feedback from 47
homes, with only two expressing
concern.
After speaking to those concerned,
Symons said they felt comfortable

Coun. Harvey Ratz asked if the
municipality would be on the hook
for any insurance liabilities. Symons
said she believed Youth
Opportunities Unlimited, which
sponsors the Exeter Youth Centre,
would cover the event under its
insurance policy. Answering another
concern from Ratz, Symons said the
event will not be serving any bever-
ages in glass containers.
South Huron operations manager
Dennis Hockey said he was comfort-
able event organizers have satisfied
any concerns about location, securi-
ty, washrooms and noise.
"We support this enthusiastic and
positive event," he said.

7 Capsule Comments

Many people have very serious allergies to bee -
stings and carry a special preloaded syringe
containing a drug to quickly counteract the sting's
effects. This drug, epinephrine, works fast and
saves lives but must be a fresh supply. If you have one of these
products, check the expiry date. If its out of date, get a new one. It
could save your life.
Speaking of allergies, this is also the time of year when pollen starts
to fly resulting in itchy eyes. There are many eye drops that help this
condition. When putting eye drops in your eye, first wash your
hands, pull your lower lid down and put the drops in the little pouch
not directly on the eyeball. Close your lids and roll your eye around.
That way you will ensure the medication gets spread around the
eye.
Our bodies are amazing. It takes only 60 seconds for our entire
blood supply )usually about 5 litres) to make a complete circuit
through the heart, lungs, blood vessels and back to the heart.
On average, every year we see our doctors 2-5 times and go to our
pharmacy 13-18 times. So it's worthwhile that we choose these
professionals carefully. We ask that you consider puffing our
pharmacists on your professional health team.

Driver charged with
dangerous driving
BLUEWATER — On May 10 shortly after midnight an
OPP officer travelling on Mill Road spotted a vehicle on
Goshen Line in Bluewater. The officer saw that the
vehicle, a blue 1985 GMC Wrangler, had a dealer plate
and when it was checked found it was not supposed to
be attached to any vehicle. The officer activated the
roof lights and instead of stopping the vehicle turned
onto Centennial Road and refused to stop. The driver
failed to stop at several stop signs and was finally
blocked in on Gulley Line and stopped. The driver was
arrested for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle,
flight from police officer and using plates not autho-
rized for the vehicle.
A 43 -year-old Bluewater man will attend court in
Goderich July 5.
