May 26, 1994 - The combina-
tion of sunshine and the balloon
festival made this year's long
weekend the best in 10 years in
Grand Bend according to OPP
Constable J.J. Arseneau. He said
over 20,000 people were in the
village each day. The Pinery Park
was also packed with their 1,000
camp sites booked solid for
months.
The SHDHS Reach for the Top quiz team won the
zone championship. Team members are coach
Barbara Golding, captain David Morlock, Jeffery
Bowen, Gavin Poole and John Soer.
The Huron -Middlesex Royal Canadian Cadet
Corps celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.The
Huron Park branch was started in 1974 by Harvey
Pfaff of the Exeter Legion and Lucan Legion's Sid
Daley and provides learning in citizenship, physical
fitness and the Armed Forces for about 50 area
young people each year.Captain Allan Cottel is
Commanding Officer this year.
25 YEARS AGO
May 25, 1979 - Paul Wareing of SHDHS was the
senior boys co -champion in the recent Huron -Perth
Conference track and field meet. Also winning first
prizes from the local school were Lucy Van
Esbroeck, Steve Pearce, Craig Degraw and Doug
Fischer.
Ontario Minister of Agriculture William Newman
was the guest speaker at the recent 11th annual
graduation exercises at Centralia College of
Agricultural Technology.
Paul and Shirley Hodgson and their two children
of Ailsa Craig are back home after spending the past
two years in Nigeria. On loan from Ontario Hydro,
Hodgson worked with the National Electrical Power
Authority of Nigeria.
The weather was great as 435 families participat-
ed in the annual Campout of the Ontario Provincial
Campers Association at the South Huron Rec Centre
over the weekend sponsored by the Exeter Nomads.
Don and Marie Brunzlow are presidents of the
Exeter Nomads.
40YEARS AGO
May 22, 1964 - First official practice of the Exeter
Mohawks who have been entered in the Huron -
Perth baseball league will be held Tuesday night.
Manager Joe Wooden has extended an invitation to
all ball players in the area to try out for spots on the
team.
Bob Beavers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Reg Beavers
broke his right leg while playing soccer at SHDHS.
The bones had to be reset and he is now in Victoria
Hospital in London.
45YEARS AGO
May 23, 1959 -Thirty-two years to the day after
he started business, veteran barber Elmore Harness
relinquished the clippers of his shop on Main Street.
His business has been taken over by Don McCurdy.
Cowan's Lunch building at Sarepta will be offered
for sale at a public auction on May 27 by the Ontario
Department of Highways.
Hurondale Dairy at Hensall was practically
destroyed by the tornado which swept through the
district Monday morning. Over 150 men of the com-
munity held a bee to clean up the debris and dairy
owner Ron Mock plans to rebuild immediately.
55YEARS AGO
May 24, 1979 - Mr. H.T. Rowe last week pulled
from his garden a stock of barley that had already
started to head out. The stock was from a seed that
had lain in the ground all winter.
Ed Hunter-Duvar will open his new service station
at the south end of town on Friday night with an old
and new time dance.
The CNR freight office at Hensall broke a record of
30 years standing last month when bean shipment
from the village reached 45,800 bags.
On June 4, Eunice Oestreicher of Dashwood will
receive the degree of Doctor of Medicine at the
spring UWO Convocation.
80YEARS AGO
May 23, 1924 - Mr. S.M. Sanders was in Chicago
last week attending the international Convention of
Garment Manufacturers.
The London to Granton stage route which has
been in operation for about 50 years was discontin-
ued on Monday last.
Mr. F.W. Abbott is enlarging his garden on
Station street.

Exeter Legion Auxiliary Bingo:

Usborne Central School 40th Anniversary:
A reminder that the Usborne Central School 40th
Anniversary is fast approaching. The date for this event
is July 10th 2004 and registration packages are to be

Lest We Forget:
Elmer Leroy Hunkin:
Elmer Leroy Hunkin was born March 4th, 1913 in
Exeter ON. He received his public and some high school
education before he decided to go out to work. He start-
ed working as a hired hand for his sister Alva and her
husband Louie. At a later date, he worked for his father
John Hunkin. John was in the concrete construction
business, specializing in building silos in the Glencoe,
Leamington, and Windsor areas.
In 1943, Elmer joined the Royal Canadian Regiment
(R.C.R.) in London ON, and received his service
#A/105781. He was then posted to Ipperwash Camp,
where he received training in driver education for many
kinds of vehicles.
In July, 1943, he was posted overseas to England.
Elmer then was transferred to the Mediterranean
