POLICE BRIEFS
Lottery scam
LUCAN BIDDULPH — The OPP received
reports from a number of residents in
Middlesex County were notified they won more
than $600,000 in the Spanish Lottery - El
Gordo.
The winners of the lottery all received
notices by mail telling them to claim their
prize money by forwarding bank account and
other personal information to a fax number
overseas. The first complainant, a resident of
Lucan Biddulph, sought advice from his finan-
cial adviser, who advised him to contact the
OPP.
According to police, Phone Busters receives
about 30 calls a week regarding this scam. The
first stage of the swindle is for personal infor-
mation, leading to identity theft. If a victim
forwards their information, a fee is requested
in order to collect the prize money.
El Gordo is an actual Spanish Lottery, and
does have an Internet -based game as well. All
residents are advised to call and ask questions
of any prize they are offered and not to for-
ward personal information until the award
checks out.

Exeter Juniors tie versus Southwest in opening game
EXETER — Exeter W&K/Co-op
Juniors coach Jeff Keller is looking
forward to this year with the team
losing just two players from last sea-
son and many of the young players
last year starting to shine.
Keller said, "I think we will have a
pretty good season. We still have a
young team and a group of guys that
really like to compete."
"We have a great core of pitchers
with Terry Hogg, Jon Brand, Mark
Laye, Jesse Schroeder and Tim
Meidinger."
"We also have one of the best
infields in our league. On
average, we made fewer
than one error per game.
That is an incredible stat
and one worth mentioning.
Many major-league teams
cannot boast that stat."
"The problem we had last year
was our bats. It was the first
year for wooden bats in our
league. Although it made for
really fast games, it took
everyone a long time to
adjust."
Keller added Junior base-
ball is thriving in the area.
There are 11 teams in the
tier one league this year
including four London
teams as well as Byron,
Mitchell, Kincardine, Strathroy,
Sarnia, and Ingersoll.
There are also five teams in the tier
two league.
Home games for the Juniors are
every Sunday at 5 p.m with the home
opener May 28 versus Kincardine
who made it to the OBA finals last
year and lost by one run.
Keller said Kincardine is a good
team and it should be a good game
Sunday.
Exeter W&K/Co-op
Juniors at Southwest
London
Last inning heroics on the
part of Exeter salvaged a tie
against Southwest May 11.
It was a pitchers duel and
hits were hard to come by.
Defensively, Exeter made
just one error in the first
inning, it cost them two runs
and they had to play catch-up
the rest of the game.
Exeter started the game off on the
right track when Mark Laye opened
up his batting season with a double in
the top of the first inning
He moved to third on a ground ball
by Matt Iredale and scored on a
throwing error by the catcher to give
the Juniors an early one -run lead.
"I give Mark credit–he had a great
hit and then scored by taking advan-
tage of a mistake by their catcher. It
was a great heads -up play," said
Keller.
Exeter let the lead slip in London's
half of the first inning when a throw-
ing error brought in two runs off
starter Mark Laye.
"Mark was pitching really well. I
think we just had some first -game jit-
ters and lost our train of thought.
These things happen in the first
game".
Laye didn't let the miscue get to
him. He stayed focused, pitched two
solid innings allowing no earned
runs, and struckout four batters
while allowing just one hit and two
walks.
From that time on, it was the pitch-
er's game. Terry Hogg came in to
pitch in the third and shut the door
on the London offense.
Over three solid innings, he had
three strike -outs and allowed just one
hit and no walks
"Terry was on fire out there today.
For the first game of the season, he
had great control and pretty good
velocity," Keller said.
Jon Brand took the hill for the final
two innings of the game and picked
up where Hogg and Laye left off.
Brand was also on fire, throwing
strikes on almost every pitch.
He threw two hitless innings, had
two strike outs and no walks.
"Jon threw right where I wanted
him too, Keller said. "He forced
London to hit ground balls every time
they were at the plate. Jon was
great."
Exeter finally got some offence in
top of the seventh inning when Justin
Hayter reached first on a single.
Ricky Regier walked and with one
out, David Gingerich had a hit over
the right fielder's head. Hayter
scored easily.
However, a coaching mistake got
Regier out trying to score from first.
"I shouldn't have sent him. I had
just one out with two of my best hit-
ters up next."
"I was really impressed with the
way the guys played today. They
played with enthusiasm and intensity.
I hope it lasts all year."
Keller said the rookies also played
well, making some contact with the
ball at the plate and making some
good plays on the field.
He added Steven Regier, the
youngest player ever to play for the
Juniors, played well for his first
game.
"He is going to develop into a solid
ball player."
