The Times Advocate, 2004-05-19, Page 19Wednesday,May 19, 2004 Exeter Times–Advocate Taekwondo silver medal HALIFAX — Sarah Cunningham, competing in the A Division for 14- 17 year olds, in the light -middle division (55-59 kg), won a silver medal in sparring at the 2004 Junior National Taekwondo Championship in Halifax, held on May 1-2. The yearly competition, hosted by the Canadian World Taekwondo Federation, is held in a different province every year, and determines who will represent Canada at inter- national events. The winners this year will repre- sent Canada at the World Junior Taekwondo Championship in Korea in July. Cunningham, a 15 -year -old from the Lucan area, has been involved in Taekwondo since she was four years old. She has been training for this event for the past six months, recov- ering from an injury that sidelined her for last year's event. She is in Grade 9 at North Middlesex High School, trains at McGillivray Central Taekwondo on weekdays, and at Elite Martial Arts Center, Cambridge on weekends. Cunningham is coached by Master Greg Bauer of Elite Martial Arts, located in Trenton. She is also trained by Val McLeod, of One on One Fitness, Lucan. In Halifax, Sarah had four match- es. Her first match was against Rekha Rajaram of New Brunswick, which she won 6-1. Her second match was against Dana Dobson, also of New Brunswick, which she won by a TKO. Her third match, in the semifinals, was a 5-5 tie against Christie Beckett of Ontario, which Cunningham won by a split decision. Her final match, fight number 183 of a total of 187 fights that day, was against Mishar Briones of British Colombia. Mishar, who also is fighting at Olympic Carding this weekend in Toronto, was last years winner of this division, and widely favoured to win again. Cunningham lost this match 6-5, in a closely fought contest which had her leading for most of the first round. It was tied in the second, and Mishar led by one point at the end of the third. It was an excellent fight, and an awesome end to the weekend according to Cunningham's father Alan. This was Cunningham's first time in this division, which was one of the largest with 14 competitors, some of who have been competing at the senior level (the next level up is for 18-29 year old)s. South Huron DHS Panthers rugby LONDON — The senior boys competed in the London Cup May 13 and while they had a tough day, sometimes losing their composure, they did put forth an excellent effort. The seniors lost their first game after only having a five minute warmup, 25-5 to Sarnia Northern. Matt Iredale scored the try. In their second game they lost 15-5 to Walkerton Sacred Heart with Justin Fields scoring the try. In their final game they defeated Woodstock St. Marys, 10-5 on two beautiful long run tries by Jordan Darling and Jamie Bibby respectively. Bibby was all over the field all day and his try was particularly spectacular, following up a great tackle by Darling. For his efforts on the day, Bibby was selected as the team MVP by coach Terry O'Rourke. The junior boys were at the London Cup May 14 and in their first game they defeated Petrolia 10-5 on two nice tires by Scott Varley and Delaney Siren. The Panthers lost their second game to a very big Clarke Rd. team, 15-5. Justin Knee scored the try on a superb individual effort. The juniors also lost their third game, 15-0 to a good Medway team. All in all on the day the team played very hard and should be commended for their play. Justin Knee played particularly well and was selected as the team tournament MVP. Opening 3-2 loss for Exeter Fury EXETER — The Exeter Fury played their first game of the season on Sunday at home against Hispanos, but came out on the short end of a 3-2 game. After being promoted to Second Division due to a strong showing last season, the Fury were looking to come out fly- ing. After an hour delay because the referee did- n't show up, the Fury began flat. They gave up several chances, but thanks to the crossbar, the score remained 0-0. Exeter drew first blood when Marty DeBruyn fed a nice cross into the box and Matt Strano finished it off to make it 1-0. The lead was short- lived, as the Hispanos fought back and took advantage of a loose ball and fired it past a helpless Nate Holmes. Exeter regained the lead when Fragiskos Fragiskatos made a quick run to the Fragiskos Fragiskatos J.38 271 LAUMGM rUG NA IT LYN 118 JOSH 97 ASHLEY 167 AUSTIN 90 STEPHANIE 89 AUSTEN JUST' TIFF--- JOS' r,► BRA[ JAYM. The Hispanos tied it once again before half when their player made a cross along the goal line that took a wicked bounce past a defender before being tapped in. The Hispanos con- trolled the play in the second half, getting sev- eral chances. During one drive, their player was dragged down in the penalty area and they scored the win- ing goal on a penalty shot. The Fury next see action may 23 at home at 7 p.m. versus Marconi.
