Huron District High School stu-
dents, Chris Passmore, Erin
Kraftcheck and Laurie Coolman
were honoured for their accom-
paniment at last week's national
Musicfest Canada competition in
Toronto.
A Mother's Day card addressed
only to Mom was received at the
Hensall Post Office. Postmaster
Linda Ferguson has displayed the envelope in the
hope someone recognizes the signature.
Chris Keyser of Hensall landed a 17 pound
salmon in the first days of the Grand Bend salmon
and trout derby.
20YEARS AGO
May 16, 1984 - Move over Main Street Jug band.
At last week's Celebration of Music at Exeter Public
School, a special number was provided by the
school's Side Street Jug Band.

May 16, 1979 - The new executive of the Auxiliary
to the R.E. Pooley branch of the Royal Canadian
Legion includes president Dawn Murray, vice-presi-
dent Janice Frayne, secretary Dorothy Pfaff and
treasurer Annie Lawson.
Former Exeterite Bill Fairbairn was a member of
the Petrolia Gibbons -Squires hockey team who last
week won the Allan Cup, Fairbairn was the oldest
player on the team at the age of 28.

May 16, 1969 - The Dashwood baseball park will
now be known as an athletic field under regulations
of the Ontario Community Centres Act. One of the
projects at hand for the new committee is the instal-
lation of flood lights at the park.

May 19, 1959 - The Clandeboye station on the
Canadian National Railways line has been sold by
tender and is to be removed.
Joanne Mair of Exeter and Audrey Rhodes an out-
standing athlete from Stratford whose parents now
live in Exeter were among nurses who graduated
from S. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in
London.
50YEARS AGO
May 18, 1954 - The Exeter Boy Scout Troupe
after being inactive for a number of years is being
re -organized. Harvey Pfaff is the Scoutmaster with
assistants Bob Luxton and Glenn Northcott.
A.J. Sweitzer former president of the Exeter Lions
was elected Deputy District Governor of clubs in this
area at a Lions rally in St. Thomas.
Over 100,000 trees are being planted in the
Ausable Forest in Hay township this spring. The big
planting program is part of the reforestation scheme
of the Ausable Valley Conservation Authority.

May 17, 1949 - Mr. and Mrs. Russell Snell have
every reason to believe that Friday the 13th is a
lucky day. On Friday, May 13 a little daughter
Elizabeth Ann came to brighten their home while
Friday, July 13, 1945 is the birthdate of their only
son John.

May 16, 1944 - Three members of the Schroeder
family now with the RCAF have been visiting with
their parents Mr. and Mrs. William Schroeder of
Centralia. They are FO Gerald Schroeder of Prince
Edward Island, FO Leroy Schroeder of Montreal and
LAC Orville Schroeder of Belleville.

May 17, 1924 - Miss Eva Carling, daughter of the
late Thomas Carling has been named superinten-
dent of St. Luke's Hospital in New York.
"Well, I'll be bobbed," is what most young ladies
are saying these days.

May 17, 1919 - Judging from the large audience
which assembled in the Crediton Town Hall
Thursday night, Uncle Tom's Cabin is still as popu-
lar as ever.
Sgt. Hillary Horton who went overseas with the
161st Battalion arrived home last week. During
most of the time he was with the blacksmith service.
Hon. Melville Martin, Premier of Saskatchewan
and his mother of London were visitors over the
weekend with Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Gladman.

Exeter Legion Auxiliary Bingo:

Usborne Central School 40th Anniversary:
A reminder that the Usborne Central School 40th
Anniversary is fast approaching. Date for this event is
July 10th 2004 and registration packages are to be
returned by the end of May, 2004. Come celebrate with
your old school chums and your favourite teachers at
Usborne School and the Beef BBQ and Dance that will
be held at the South Huron Rec. Centre. Dancing to fol-

Lest We Forget:
Private Daniel Laing
John Daniel Laing was born in 1899, Hay Township,
Huron County. He enlisted with the 161st Huron
Battalion, Exeter Ontario, where he acquired his initial
army training. His service # was 654353. From Exeter
he was sent to Clinton Ontario along with four other
men, who also had enlisted in Exeter with the 161st
Huron Battalion.
They were then sent to Hillcrest Camp, London
Ontario in 1916, for further training, then on to Camp
Borden, where they received their final training before
being shipped overseas. The 161st Huron Battalion then
sailed on the S.S. Lapland out of Halifax on November
