TIMES -ADVOCATE Exeter 235-1331 Education Matters Randy Wagler,Trustee, Huron Area 4 - South AVON MAITLAND DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD Recently, the Avon Maitland District School Board approved a new mission statement: "To unlock the potential within all of our learners". This new mission statement was developed fol- lowing a consultative process that began with the "Shaping Our Future" conference in the spring of 2003, and was followed up with an evening in November where more than 30 par- ticipants brainstormed ideas for a new mission statement. The attendees at that meeting included students, teachers, staff, parents, com- munity members and trustees, and the ideas from that meeting were sent to the school com- munity for further input. So what was wrong with the previous mission statement: "To develop, support and encourage lifelong learners in a safe, caring educational community dedicated to quality education, mutual respect, compassion and integrity"? Well, nothing really. We agreed with everything contained in it. However there was also general agreement that it was too long, and was too dif- ficult to remember easily. This new mission statement is certainly short- er, and we believe that it gets at the heart of what our purpose as a Board should be. The first part of our new mission statement is "To unlock the potential". We believe that our students have the potential to be great people measured by whatever yard- stick you choose to use charac- ter, knowledge, skills, etc. However, for this potential to have benefit for the individual and for us as a society, it needs to be unlocked. Like opening a door to reveal the hidden trea- sures in a room, our students', potentials need to be exposed. The second part of our mis- sion statement "within all of our learners" speaks to our belief that there is a unique poten- tial in every student. No matter what the back- ground of a student, no matter what his or her limitations appear to be, we believe that every student has the potential to achieve beyond what they are currently doing. Our goal then, is to ensure that all of our students strive towards reaching and expanding their potential. So, what's so important about a mission state- ment? In our case, it's a simple but profound statement of what we are trying to accomplish as a public school Board, and it affirms our commitment to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to accomplish great things according to their own unique potential.
