Members of the
Lake HuronWater Supply System
GRAND BEND — Pumping an
average of 157 million litres per day,
the Lake Huron Water Supply
System employs 10 full-time staff
and had a 2003 maximum day pro-
duction of 265 million litres.
The water treatment system
employs chemically assisted sedi-
mentation, filtration and gaseous
chlorine as the primary disinfectant.
It is monitored using online
anaylzers and computerized
Supervisor Control and Data
Acquistion systems.
The intake crib for the water treat-
ment facility is located two kilome-
tres offshore in about 10 metres of
water.
The intake crib is designed for the
plant's ultimate treatment capacity
of 454 million lites per day for when
the plant eventually expands.
The water treatment plant has a
generator on-site in the event of a
power failure to supply power to
pumps and treatment, control and
monitoring systems for seven to 10
days.
The total annual operating budget
for the Lake Huron system is $14
million, of which the largest portion
goes to electricity, accounting for
$3.2 million in 2003.
Other Facts:
• a faucet that drips once per sec-
ond wastes 4,600 lites of water per
year (for each faucet).
• in summer months up to 75 per
cent of water applied to a lawn
between 10 a.m and 4 p.m. is lost
through evaporation and never
reaches the plants' roots.
• between 70 and 80 per cent of
the earth is covered with water, but
less than one per cent of the surface
water can be treated for drinking
water using conventional treatment
systems.
Of all the water in the world, 97
per cent is in the oceans, (which
requires costly desalination systems
for treament), two per cent is in ice
caps and glaciers and 0.3 per cent is
deep underground (too deep to be
usable).
0.3 per cent is underground rela-
tively near the surface (only about
half of which has low enough salt
content to be usable), 0.3 per cent in
the atmosphere and only 0.1 per
cent is in streams, rivers and lakes
(fresh water).
