Huron Hurricanes swim to fundraise
GODERICH — The
Huron Hurricanes held a
Swim-a-thon on April 17
at the Maitland Recreation
Centre in Goderich.
At 7 a.m Emily Walraven
was the first swimmer in
the water followed by the
other team members to
begin the first of many 25
metre laps.
By 9 a.m, only two hours
later, 19 swimmers had
completed a total of 2043
laps and raised $1,391 to
support swimming in
Huron County.
From the youngest
swimmers to the senior
swimmers there was a
steady churning of the
water as swimmers
worked their way back
and forth for two hours
while parents counted laps
and called out encourag-
ing words.
The younger swimmers
used a variety of strokes
and techniques.
Words of encourage-
ment helped but finally the
swimmers had to put out
effort and they certainly
proved their stuff.
Young Melissa Riley
swam three laps and
Rachel Vanneste finished
six.
Ethan Pettapiece took a
little time to get the feel of
it at the beginning but
made up for it later by
keeping a steady pace for
30 laps.
Panthers track and field
KETTLE CREEK — The Panthers track
and field team started its season off in
fine style April 24 at the Kettle Creek
Invitational meet in St. Thomas
The Panthers sent six competitors and
between them they brought home seven
medals.
Sarah Watson tied for 10th in junior
girls long jump.
Maggie Roberts was sixth in her junior
girls 80 metre hurdles heat.
Kelly Cronyn won her midget girls 300
metre hurdles heat in the second fastest
time overall to capture the silver medal.
She also managed a fifth place finish in
the 80 metre hurdles.
Kylen Van Osch won matching silver
medals in the 300 and 80 metre hurdles
for junior girls and added a fourth place
finish in the high jump, just missing a
bronze medal.
Melanie McCann won a silver medal
1500 metre race for the junior girls then
added a bronze in the 800. In
addition she placed 13th in
the long jump.
Justine Clark won a bronze
medal in the junior girls 80
metre hurdles and gold
medal in the high jump.
She was also 10th in the
100 metres. —
Miss Hone, Mr Watson and
the rest of the team's coach-
ing staff congratulate the girls on a
tremendous effort and look forward to
what promises to be an exciting track
and field season.
The Panthers continued to turn in some
outstanding performances as they partic-
ipated in the Holy Cross-Strathroy DCI
meet April 29. The strong winds made it
difficult for the athletes but they perse-
vered and several turned in their best
performances to date.
One of the highlights of the day for the
girls' team was the midgets girls' 3000
metre race.
Melanie McCann set a strong pace in
spite of the wind to capture first place by
over 10 seconds.
