and 0-1 versus Northwestern. (Below) Pete Phouttharath moves up field for the

Centennials cease play
EXETER — The Exeter Centennials
have ceased play locally.
Centennials coach and general man-
ager John Rasenberg said the rights to
the club have been given over to Harry
Gauss of London City.
"There is no longer enough talent in
Exeter to support a Premier team," said
Rasenberg.
"We brought the team from Second to
First and from First to Premier and the
percentage of Exeter players dropped
somewhat with each step."
"There comes a time when you have
to make a hard decision, but also a real-
istic one."
"But we did have a team that was in
Premier and we stayed in the middle of
the pack last year and we beat the
London Portuguese."
Rasenberg added some of the players
were moving to the Exeter Fury, which
would strengthen the club and he
wished the Fury good luck in the up
coming season.
SH Panther rugby teams

South Huron dominated the overtime
and came away with a 19-5 victory.

Denise Ritchie and Julie Prout.
Erica MacTavish kicked two conver-
sions and Sabrina Brand and Amber
Caldwell also played particularly well.
The senior boys also played well but
St. Annes capitalized on mistakes and
defeated South Huron 19-5.
Corey Lawton scored the one try for
the Panthers. Well done to the seniors
for an excellent effort.
The juniors finished off the day with a
22-5 victory. Mitch Iredale scored two
tries and Justin Knee and Brett Crerar
each added one.
Knee also kicked a conversion. All
three teams showed some very good
improvement, especially the forwards

All in all it was an excellent afternoon
of rugby.

Gold medal for Bantams
in Czech Republic
PRAGUE — Huron
Perth Major Bantam
players Scott Muirhead
and Mac Potter of
Exeter, Kenny Allen of
Hensall and Derek
Sowerby and Blair
Bennett of Lucan had a
chance to see how
hockey is played on the
other side of the
Atlantic ocean for the
last two weeks.
They were among the
members of the team
that left for the Czech
Republic to participate
in an international
tournament April 12.
Coached by Dennis
Knox and manager
Dave Tiffin of
Wingham, the team
along with staff and
parents left Toronto
for a hockey experi-
ence of a life time.
The team had been
preparing for the trip
for almost a year.
The team arrived in
Prague April 13 and
loaded up two buses to
head to Slany about a
25 minute bus ride
from the airport before
their first practice that
afternoon.
Wednesday morning
they had another prac-
tice before an exhibi-
tion game that after-
noon against a team
from Valentuna HK
Sweden.
The Lakers had some
adjusting to do with the
bigger ice surface, no
red line and the differ-
ent refereeing style and
were defeated 4-1 with
12 penalties compared
to four for Sweden.
Thursday morning the
Lakers had a practice
before another exhibi-
tion game in the after-
noon verses a local
team from Slany.
The team now had
three practices and one
game under its belt and
had some idea on what
would have to be done
to win.
After being out num-
bered in the penalty
department again they
managed to pull off a
5-2 win.
Friday was the start
of the Spring Challenge
Cup II tournament. The
Lakers' first game of
the tournament was
against a team from
Finland called Kiekko
- Vantaa.
The Major Bantams
played well and pulled
off a 15-0 win with Dan
Armstrong getting the
shutout. The penalties
were 10 for Huron -
Perth and five for
Finland.
That after-
noon the next
opponent was
HC Kobra
Praha from
the Czech
Republic
which was a
very physical
game with
lots of stick
work and
slew footing
being done by
the Europeans accord-
ing to Knox.
Knox said the
Bantams lost their
composure and did not
play very disciplined.
They lost to a strong
select Austria team
who had won the tour-
nament the last two
years, by the score of
6-4.
Before the next game
the Lakers participated
in a skills competition
where they won a cup
for finishing first in
overall team points.
Sunday was the
championship day. The
Lakers finished second
in the pool and would
face the first place
team from the other
pool who were from the
Czech Republic as well,
called HC Bili Tygri
Liberec.
Knox said the referee-
ing in the game was
"unbelievable" and
again Huron -Perth had
to play short handed
most of the game.
But two Lakers'
shorthanded goals
seemed to turn the
momentum of the game
in favour of Huron -
Perth and they defeat-
ed HC Bili Tygri
Liberec 2-1 to go onto
the gold medal game.
The team from
Austria defeated Vaxjo
Lakers from Sweden in
their semi-final and
Austria would be the
opponents for the gold
medal game.
Huron -Perth took a 2-
0 lead
before
Austria cut
the lead in
half in the
third
before
Huron Perthh
added a
final goal
for the 3-1
lead and

the gold

medal.
The Vaxjo Lakers
from Sweden lost to
Czech Republic in the
bronze medal game by
the score of 8-4 which
was played before the
Huron -Perth game.
The team from
Sweden stayed to cheer
Huron -Perth on to a
gold medal victory.
After receiving the
gold medal and cup,
the Huron -Perth play-
ers exchanged
sweaters with the
Laker team from
Sweden.
Knox said he was
extremely proud of the
17 men who had to
adapt to a different cul-
ture, no red line and a
different style of refer-
eeing.
He said they will all
have many fond memo-
ries of this experience
and appreciate the ref-
ereeing they receive in
Canada a lot more.
