Juno nominations for Lucan drummer
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — With two
Juno nominations for best
alternative album under
his belt, Doug MacGregor
of Lucan has come a long
way from when he was
14 and picking stones for
farmers to raise money
for a drum kit.
MacGregor is a member
of the band Constantines,
which has seen increasing
success in Canada and
the United States since
forming in 1999.
The Constantines, play-
ing alternative rock with
a metallic edge, consists
of MacGregor, Bryan
Webb, Steve Lambke,
Dallas Wehrle and Will
Kidman
The band, formed in
Guelph in 1999, released
in 2001 their self titled
first album by Thre e Gut
Records.
It brought them their
first Juno nomination for
Best Alternative Album
and took them on a tour
of the United States.
The album almost broke
the record for longest
charting album in
Canadian campus radio
history and placed on sev-
eral top 10 year end lists.
After releasing two EPs
in 2002 and 2003, the
band was signed by
Seattle label Sub Pop
records, which released
the Constantines' second
album in the summer of
2003. Shine a Light
brought the band their
second Juno nomination
for alternative album of
the year.
MacGregor is back out
on the road with the rest
of the band from April 20
until May 21, touring
Canada from Thunder
Bay, across the Prairies
and down the west coast
of the United States to
San Fransisco.
The band will complete
their tour cutting across
the desert into Texas
before heading through
the midwest into Chicago.
MacGregor says he
doesn't know which he
prefers between touring
and recording.
"I like going out but
there is always that time
when you hit the wall and
want to come home. But I
can't afford to travel to
these places, so if I can
drum my way there I
will."
The Constantines just
returned from a three
week European tour. "It
was good to see those
places, and sometimes

EXETER - Ontario Beta Alpha Master Chapter of
Beta Sigma Phi met at the home of Rosemary Schaefer
on April 20. President Maida Gaiser called the meeting
to order. Tickets were distributed to the play, Guys
and Dolls, at Stratford for May 6 by Schaefer. Plans
were made to have dinner after the musical. Verla
Russell announced that the BBQ at Darlings would be
held July 16 and 17.
Elsie Hermann stated that $5,634.30 had been
raised for the Cancer Society on Daffodil Day. Lynda
Deelstra gave the information regarding the wind-up
party to be held May 18 beginning at 6:15 p.m.
Schaefer presented an interesting and challenging
program including a picture where you could see two
images and a Food Match game. The group viewed the
beautiful four -seasons wall hanging Schaefer had just
finished for the upcoming quilt show in Stratford
which will raise funds for breast cancer. Co -hostesses
Shirley Walkom and Schaefer served a delicious lunch.

people knew your band
and were pretty into it."
"It's weird when you're
travelling the other side of
the world and people are
asking you about bands
that are from here, and
you know them."
The current tour will
probably be the last big
tour until the fall accord-
ing to MacGregor.
"We'll be doing shows
sporadically, I think most
of the time we're going to
spend writing new songs
and then sometime in the
fall tour again. The songs
tend to come into their
own when we play them
live. No matter how you
practice them, playing
them live, they find their
own life. So we don't
want to record anything
until we done that."
