SAINTSBURY NEWS FCapsule Comments by Ernie Miatello Sudden infant death syndrome ISIDSI is the sudden unexplained death of an infant under the age of one year. Having your new baby sleep on his back can reduce the risk of SIDS. Other risk factors include maternal use of alcohol during pregnancy, keeping the child too warm during sleep and bedding that is too soft. There is a kidney enzyme that can cause blood vessels to narrow causing blood pressure to rise. To combat this, there are drugs that actually inhibit that enzyme to keep blood pressure down. This enzyme has to land on a certain "receptor site" to raise blood pressure. Another drug has been designed to block that enzyme from sitting on that action site hence keeping blood pressure down. It's quite interesting knowing how a drug actually works in our bodies. Can I take an antidepressant when I am breastfeeding? It's a common question in our pharmacy. Most medications the mother takes can appear in the breast milk and the concentrations the baby receives depend on many variables. Yes, there are antidepressants that are safe while breastfeeding. Check with your doctor or pharmacist. Medications can be both helpful and harmful and when it comes to pregnancy and breastfeeding. Knowledge of a drug's effect in these two special life situations is very important. Pharmacists have up-to- date information about the safety of drugs used during pregnancy and lactation.
