Cancer fundraiser gets
a bylaw exemption

SOUTH HURON — Council is giving a
noise bylaw exemption to organizers of a
fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer
Society.
Relay for Life will be held overnight at
South Huron District High School May
28-29. Students Meagan Spence and
Shannon Baer requested the noise bylaw
exemption so music could be played on
the track outside overnight from 7 p.m.
to 7 a.m. to "motivate" walkers. During
the 12 -hour relay, teams must always
have at least one member of their team
walking or running the track.
The students have sent letters to
neighbours of the school about the
music and said they've received no
objections back.
"Everyone is pretty excited about it,"
Baer said.
The students assured council the
music won't be "blasting" on the track
and won't keep neighbours awake.
Coun. Pete Armstrong suggested plac-
ing speakers at the end of the school
field away from the houses.
Coun. Ken Oke asked if "good, quality
country music" will be played.
Mayor Rob Morley wished Spence and
Baer luck.
"It's certainly a very worthwhile
cause," he said.
Other notes from council:
New CBO hired
After the resignation of Jeff Jilek,
South Huron has hired a new chief
building official, Robert Pattison of Fort
Nelson, B.C.
Pattison will also take over the building
and development manager position from
Wayne Dale, who will become South
Huron's building inspector. Dale will
also take responsibility for bylaw
enforcement and property standards.
Both Pattison and his fiance are origi-
nally from Ontario and have family in
the province. Pattison will join the
municipality in three to four weeks.
Fire Dept. report
South Huron fire chief John Morgan
presented his quarterly report for the
first three months of 2004, noting
responses were "about normal." So far
this year, the Exeter station has
responded to 11 calls, Huron Park has
responded to 10 calls and Dashwood has
responded to seven calls.
Council also gave Morgan the go-
ahead to buy a 2000 Freightliner chassis
for a replacement of the Exeter station
rescue truck. The municipality will buy
the truck from BMB Engine Company of
Huron Park, which gave the municipali-
ty a $20,000 discount. The truck was
quoted at $106,096. Since Morgan was
given permission to spend $115,000, he
will use the rest of the money for options
on the truck like shelving and lighting
which had been previously eliminated to
keep quotes low.
BMB's quote was the lowest South
Huron received.
Kirkton well capped
South Huron and South Perth will
divide evenly the $10,000 cost to cap the
Kirkton well and keep it for possible
future use. The other option, shutting
down the well permanently, would have

No Credit Union in Zurich
ZURICH — There'll be no Credit Union
coming to Zurich.
Heartland Community Credit Union
announced April 29 its board and man-
agement have decided not to open a
financial services operation in the vil-
lage.
The decision followed a comprehensive
business case analysis performed by
management which included a detailed
financial services survey of Zurich and
area residents and businesses. Survey
results indicated there wasn't enough
business available to support a Zurich -
based Credit Union.
"Zurich area residents and business
owners can be assured that the Credit
Union's business case assessment was
thorough, performed objectively and
with the sincere intent to justify the
establishment of community-based
financial services.
"A significant amount of time and
expense was incurred during the assess-
ment period," Heartland Credit Union
CEO Jim Lynn stated last week.
Heartland's head office is in Clinton,
with branches in Exeter and Listowel.
