Exeter golfer at ISU
IOWA — Exeter resi-
dent Karly Pinder has
signed a letter of intent
with the Iowa State
women's golf
team to attend
ISU beginning in
the fall of 2004,
ISU women's
head golf coach
Julie Manning
announced April
15.
Pinder has been
rated as one of
the best junior
players in
Canada, holding a
1.9 handicap and earning
a spot on the 2003
Ontario Provincial Golf
team that finished first at
the Canadian Junior Girls
National Championship.
A January graduate of
St. Anne's High School,
Pinder placed fourth at
the 2003 Ontario Girl's
Championship and fifth at
the 2003 Canadian Junior
Girl's National
Championship
held in Quebec
City, Quebec.
"We are look-
ing forward to
Karly's arrival
on campus,"
Manning said.
"She's a terrific
talent with
great creden-
tials. I really
look for her to
make her mark in her
final summer in Canada
as a junior player. She
was in the hunt for the
Canadian Junior
Championship last sum-
mer and we look for great
things to happen for ISU

Pinder also participated

She will be pursuing a
degree in sport manage-

Hurricanes perform well at Spring Turbocharge meet
WATERLOO — The Huron
Hurricanes attended the Spring
Turbocharge Meet hosted by the
Region of Waterloo at the 50
metre pool at Wilfrid Laurier
University April 3.
Ten clubs with a total of 180
swimmers from the
Southwestern Ontario Region
attended the long course meet.
With a combined team of 11
junior and senior swimmers and
accompanied by parents and
coach Julia Pettapiece, the
Hurricanes were well represent-
ed in the day's events.
Meaghan Livingston of
Vanastra swam in the 11 and
under 100 freestyle event finish-
ing with a personal best time of
1:33.62.
In the 100 metre backstroke
she finished with a good time of
2:07.55 and shaved two seconds
off in her 100 metre breast-
stroke to finish with a personal
best time of 2:03.75.
Livingston swam the 200 indi-
vidual medley for the first time
earning a good time of 4:20.75.
Bridget Livingston, from
Vanastra, was the one girl from
the Huron Hurricanes swim-
ming in the 12-13 year old girls
events.
Livingston had a personal best
time in the 100 metre freestyle
finishing with a time of 1;30.12.
In the 200 metre freestyle,
Livingston finished with a time
of 3:12.01.
In the 100 metre backstroke
Livingston shaved four seconds
off to finish with a time of
1:43.56.
Livingston finished her day
with a time of 3:43.26 in the
200 metre individual medley.
Nickolas Vaessens of the
Hensall area had an excellent
day of swimming in the boys 12-
13 year old events where he
posted all personal best times.
Vaessen cut 38 seconds off in
the 100 freestyle finishing with
a time of 1:30.68.
In the 100 metre backstroke
Vaessens finished in 1:50.53 and
completed the 100 metre
breaststroke in a good time of
2:10.01.
Vaessens completed his swim-
ming day with an excellent
swim in the 100 butterfly well
under two minutes with a per-
sonal best time of 1:53.68.
In the girls 14-15 year old 400
individual medley Aiden Barnett
finished in fifth place in a time of
6:32.44 followed closely by
Christy Harman of Hensall with
a sixth place finish.
Patrick Livingston of Clinton
had strong swims.
Livingston swam in the boys
16 and over 50 metre back-
stroke, finishing in a time of
40.46 shaving two seconds off to
finish third in the event.
Livingston completed the 50
metre butterfly cutting four sec-
onds off his seed time and fm-
ishing fourth with a time of
37.02.
In the 50 metre breaststroke,
Livingston finished with a fifth
place in the 50 metre breast-
stroke with a time of 40:46.
Livingston also swam in the 50
metre freestyle finish with a per-
sonal best time of 31.20.
A swimmer from the Clinton
area, Valerie Otten, started the
day by cutting off 17 seconds in
the 13-14 year old 100 metre
freestyle event with a finishing
time of 1:15.37.
In the 100 metre backstroke
Otten achieved a time of 1:25.88
and posted a good time in the
100 metre breastroke which
could not be counted because of
a disqualification.
Otten came back strong to
complete her swimming day
with a 1:32.56 in the 100 metre
butterfly and earned a fifth
place finish.
Rebecca Melady, also from
Clinton, had a good day of swim-
ming earning personal best
times.
Melady cut seven seconds off
her seed time in the 14-15 year
old girls 200 metre freestyle to
finish with a 2:56.06.
In the 200 metre backstroke,
Melady had a personal best time
of 3:14.97 and posted another
personal best time in the 100
metre backstroke finishing with
a time of 1:47.13.
Melady finished the day with a
strong swim in the 200 metre
individual medley where she cut
13 seconds off her posted time
to finish with a 3:16. 51.
Christy Hartmann of Hensall
had a strong swim in the 14-15
year old 200 metre breaststroke
earning a third place with a
time of 3:44.66.
Hartman also finished the 14-
15 200 metre backstroke with a
personal best time of 3;16.93.
In the 100 metre freestyle
Hartman had another personal
best time of 1:20.17.
Sarah Vaessen, also of
Hensall, had an excellent day of
swimming with a personal best
time of 1:22.04 in the 14-15
year old 100 metre freestyle.
This was 15 seconds faster
than her seed time.
Vaessen also cut nine seconds
off her time in the 100 metre
backstroke to finish in 1:47.07.
Vaessen had another strong
swim in the 100 metre breas-
troke with a time of 1:53.97 and
finished the day swimming a
personal best time of 1:51.81 in
the 100 butterfly.
It was a great way to get ready
for the Team Champs weekend
at Etobicoke Olympium which
began April 23.
