(photo/Mary Simmons) WI book coming GRAND BEND - The Grand Bend Women's Institute annual meeting was held at Sauble Court on Apri115. A bountiful potluck luncheon preceded the business meet- ing. District President Joan Smith brought greetings from the Huron South District. The scrapbook for the Killarney WI in Manitoba is completed and a duplicate will be made. This book con- tains information from Ontario, Grand Bend, and Huron County. It also contains craft ideas, recipes, and autobi- ographies of Grand Bend WI members. Grand Bend WI will receive a book from the Manitoba WI branch. A `Quilt in a Box' project will begin soon and the resulting quilt will be sold June 2005. The Exeter/Zurich fair list was discussed. The convention plans for October in Holmesville were fmalized. The district picnic is on July 6 in Crediton. The district annual meeting is in Zurich on May 20. Lois Gill will attend the ROSE (Rural Ontario Sharing Education) information meeting in Ilderton on April 29. A donation of money will be given to Exeter Fair. Several women brought their winter work projects for roll call. The quilting, crocheting, tatting, knitting and weaving projects were a result of profitable, long hours of work. A large donation of crib quilts, books, crayons, and toys were collected for the Children's Hospital. The women expressed their congratulations to Cass Lovie upon her retirement from nursing at Strathroy Hospital. Capsule Comments by Ernie Miatello Polio could be wiped out throughout the world by the year 2005. Full eradication is the goal of the World Health Organization and with the help of Rotary clubs around the world, this goal will be reached. Since 1988, polio transmission has been cut by 99% due to mass immunization. Doctors often prescribe creams to apply to skin rashes of various types. All the creams look the same... white and creamy. In the mid -1800s, to reduce infections, Joseph Lister sprayed carbolic acid over the surgeons and patient before an operation. There are many, many effective laxatives on pharmacy shelves to help treat or prevent constipation. Mineral oil was once a popular laxative but isn't as highly recommended anymore.
