RICHMOND HILL —
Three Exeter ringette
players were a part of the
provincial champions
Mitchell Newtech Ag Inc.
Junior 'A' ringette team.
Aleisha Heywood,
Kristyn Regier and
Jasmine Van Haarlem
were a part of the squad
that brought home the
gold medal from the
seven -team provincial
tournament in Richmond
Hill March 25-28.
Mitchell defeated
Hamilton 4-3 in sudden -
death overtime to win the
top prize.
The win was especially
sweet as most of the team
were silver medal win-
ners at the provincials
one year ago, and two
years before that, the
tween-aged girls brought
home the provincial
bronze.
"It was a battle," said an
excited and exhausted
head coach Gary Ryan
Monday. "It was definitely
a battle."
Since Mitchell had beat-
en Hamilton 4-2 earlier in
the tournament, the locals
were given an automatic
berth in the championship
game.
Sudden -death followed,
with Lindsay Nash's
shorthanded backhander
finding a way through a
crowd and into the net,
giving Mitchell the cham-
pionship.
"I can't even describe
the feeling," Ryan said
after seeing the ring cross
the goal line. "After see-
ing the looks on the girls
faces last year when we
lost to West Ferris, it was
nice to see their hard
work pay off."
Laura Scott scored two
goals in the final, with
Kristen Flanagan adding
a single.
This time, they won
when it mattered.
Mitchell opened the
tournament with a 2-1
loss to Burlington last
Thursday morning, as
Scott was the only
markswoman.
The locals regrouped
later in the day with a 5-1
win over Valley East as
Flanagan scored twice.
Lyndsay Batten, Aleisha
Heywood and Scott added
other goals, while Kristyn
Regier and Scott each
picked up two assists.
The next day, Lisa
Lamont scored three
goals to pace a 10-2 rout
of Thunder Bay.
Jasmine Van Haarlem,
Jenna Elliott, Jenilee
Ryan, Trish O'Donnell,
Nash, Regier and Batten
also scored, with Batten,
Ryan, O'Donnell and Nash
all contributing three
assists.
Later, down 3-2 with
just over eight minutes to
go to Pickering, Ryan,
Scott and Lamont scored
to rally the locals to a 5-3
win.
Batten had two goals
and two assists, with
Lamont and Ryan adding
a pair of helpers of their
own.
Two goals in the final 68
seconds of the game
allowed Nepean to stun
the locals 3-2 Saturday
morning, as they scored
the tying goal with 69 sec-
onds left, then scored the
winner at the buzzer.
Batten and Lamont
scored in the heartbreak-
ing loss, with Ryan adding
two assists.
Mitchell was able to
shake off the tough loss
and beat Hamilton 4-2
later in the day.
Shannon McGuire, Scott,
Nash and Lamont scored
in their final round -robin
win, with Batten – the
club's leading scorer in
the tournament with 14 -
points – had three assists.
Mitchell was voted the
sportsmanship award as
well as the gold, as each
of the teams selected the
club they felt was worthy
of the honour.
"That was like a feather
in our cap," he said.
Ryan added the team
had its sights set on gold
from the outset of the
