SPRING HOME IMPROVEMENT
How to add colour to your wood finishing projects
Twenty years ago, if you
wanted a professionally
stained finish for your
shop -made chair or cabi-
net, you either had to be
a professional yourself or
look to hire one. Today
there are finishing gels
that even a novice do-it-
yourselfer can easily
apply with outstanding
results. And this with no
mixing, no matching, just
straight out of the can.
One such product actu-
ally lets you finish the job
as soon as you start. Circa
1850 Stain'n Varnish
combines the penetration
of a wood stain with the
protective qualities of a
hand rubbed varnish all
in one easy to use gel.
"You no longer have to
stain your wood, wait till
it dries, then apply the
finish," said a representa-
tive from a leading manu-
facturer of wood finishing
products. "You can now
do both in one quick and
easy step."
Consumers have been
singing the praises of its
ease of application and
handsome soft sheen fin-
ish that is completely free
of dust specks and brush
marks. "It's so easy a
child can apply it," said
Paul Heyming, a novice
woodworker who recently
used Circa 1850
Stain'n Varnish to revi-
talize an antique dining
table. "The first coat is
simply wiped on with a
rag. There's no need to
sand, simply let it dry 12-
24 hours."
Applying additional
hand -rubbed coats will
deepen the colour and
add more protection,
added Chaimberg. "Or
you can use Circa 1850
Antique Paste Varnish as
the second coat to get the
added protection without
changing the colour."
The varnish allows you

Decorate
for day-to-
day living
The Canadian leader in
hardware and renovation,
has plenty of suggestions
to enhance the comfort of
your home and the well-
being of all those living
there.
When you set up and
organize your home, it
makes sense to do it in a
way that makes life easier:
spare lines, room -divi-
sions, easy access, practi-
cal storage. These are the
features that make any
home a pleasure to live in.
The entryway: your
home's way of saying
hello
The entryway sets the
tone and announces the
style of your home.
Recently we've seen a
return of the mud room, a
concept that makes the
entryway more practical
and functional. Racks,
hooks and shelves provide
lots of space to store coats,
umbrellas, scarves, boots
and dirty shoes, and easy -
care floor coverings
reduce the headache of
keeping the area clean.
The office: a must for
today's busy families
Today the home office
has truly come into its
own. Often doubling as the
family library, this is a
bright room with big win-
dows and lots of ingenious
storage arrangements for
books, papers and office
accessories. It should be
warm, inviting, inspiring.
Make sure to install a mul-
tifunction plug for the
phone, fax and internet.
Having a powder room
nearby is another great
idea.
The kitchen: the
heart and center of
the home
No longer the exclusive
domain of the lady of the
house in her starched
white apron, the kitchen
has become the centre of
today's home, where all
the members of the family
gather to cook, do home-
work, read the mail, hang
out with friends or just
chat. This new daily reality
influences the way the
room should be set up and
designed. Counters of
varying heights will
accommodate little ones
and adults alike. A lunch
counter is the perfect spot
for breakfast or home-
work. An office corner
gives you a handy spot to
keep books and a comput-
er for consulting online
recipes. If space permits, a
real pantry provides a nice
touch with plenty of space
for packaged goods.
The laundry room and
the bathroom: two sepa-
rate rooms, two separate
functions
The washer and dryer
have a place of their own
hi the laundry and ironing
room, freeing up space for
the latest rave in bathroom
appliances. How about a
big glassed -in shower with
a molded bench? The sink
is tucked away behind a
door, and the tub —
equipped with jets for a
whirlpool effect, of course
— is comfortably molded
and shaped for relaxation.
The home theatre:
make way for
entertainment!
The home theatre, born
of the marriage of technol-
ogy and cocooning, is the
ultimate necessary acces-
sory in today's modern
home.
A closed space, sound-
proof and dark, the room
has a remote dimmer for
the lights, a small fridge,
and cushy armchairs com-
fortably spaced before a
giant screen set into the
wall along with the audio-
visual equipment and
speakers. Let the show
begin!
surface: wood, plastic,
metal, masonite, compos-
ite, etc. It is the best way
to give non -wood sur-
faces, such as embossed
composite doors, the look
of real wood.
Besides ease of use and
a consistent finish, Circa
1850 Stain'n Varnish can
also offer a new colour
dimension to the finishing
spectrum with grain high-
lighting. "You can take
any kind of wood — oak,
cherry, whatever — and
finish it in forest green,
emerald and steel blue or
even black cherry,"
added Chaimberg.
"That's something you
just can't do with any-
thing else. And because it
is transparent, a thin
coat of a contrasting
colour over an existing
colour can be used to give
wood an antique, dis-
tressed, or faux -finish."
