Whether you have a large backyard or limit- ed space, you can create a beautiful oasis. All it takes is some time and a little care to create the perfect backyard retreat for those warm summer nights. Lawn and garden team has put together some tips to help you get started on your garden inspirations this spring. • Plan before you start. Decide whether you want a vegetable, herb, or flower garden. Whatever you decide, select a variety of plants. It's not only visually appealing but also helps prevent disease and pest infestation. Next, decide where you want to plant your garden. Keep in mind that placing a gar- den near the house allows you to keep an eye on it daily, which can help pre- vent excessive weeds and disease. For shady sites, there are many types of plants and flowers that flourish in that environment. • Prepare the area. Once you have chosen where you want to have your garden, you need to get the ground ready. Clear the area of debris and turn the soil. Adding organic matter to the soil adds nutrients and will increase the chances of plant survival. • Plant your garden. Most plants come with instructions on when to plant, how deep to place them, and how far apart they should be. If you need assistance, ask at your local garden centre - many stores have a horti- culturalist on staff. • Maintenance is an important part of creating a garden. Typically, the climate in your area dic- tates water requirements. Keep note of humidity lev- els, the moisture of your soil and how often it rains. Water plants slowly and close to the bottom to allow the water to soak in and do so early in the morning to reduce evapo- ration. • Mulch - To help the growth of your plants, place mulch on top of soil. Mulch helps to keep weeds out and moisture in. • Fertilize - A liquid fer- tili7er should be used once a month or a dry fertilizer about halfway through the gardening season to keep your garden looking its best. • Enjoy - Creating a beautiful garden takes work and dedication, with regular upkeep. The results can be rewarding and with the right tools, good advice and a little luck, you can create a wonderful escape in your own backyard. News Canada SPRUCE UP FOR SPRING! Ever wonder how to keep those mosquitoes out of your backyard while entertaining outdoors? The following tips will help keep mosquitoes from ruining your outdoor fun so you can enjoy your patio and deck this sum- mer: • Wear light colours when outside - mosqui- toes prefer darker shades that radiate heat • Don't use strong fra- grances - heavily scented toiletries like soap and perfume may attract mos- quitoes • Clean up the yard - mosquitoes will lay their eggs in virtually anything that will accumulate water • If out during the day, stay in the sun - mosqui- toes prefer shady, wind- less areas • If you prefer applying repellent directly to your skin, personal insect repellents are available in sprays, lotions, and foam consistencies. Look for federally registered insect repellents that are effec- tive, none -greasy and won't stain. - News Canada More 0 What You looking For • 18 to 20 HP single or twin cylinder, OHV engines. • Cutting decks from 42" to 46" • Cast-iron front axle • CVT or hydrostatic transmission See dealer for details White\[r OUTDOOR You get more. zeal CGEQUIPMENT Tel: 519-236-4934 38 Main Street Fax: 519-236-7330 Zurich, Ontario Email: cgfarm@hay.net Gardeners Choice On Highway 83 2 miles west of Exeter 519-237-3389 fJc=i1Lia3 • Peat Moss • Mulch • Fertilizer • Soils • Beautiful Perennials • Colourful Pansies • Planters and much more • Custom Planting Bring your pots in early to beat the rush Special Planters for Mother's Day • Gift certificates available • At Gardeners Choice, you will find Quality and Selection are the rule!
