The Times Advocate, 2004-04-21, Page 1010 Exeter Times–Advocate Wednesday, April 21, 2004 Rasenberg family donation gives big boost to conservation event By Jim Beckett TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — Jamie Rasenberg loved the outdoors, especially the Morrison Dam area. This feeling was expressed by his father John Rasenberg Thursday night as the Rasenberg family made the largest donation to date in support of local conservation. A cheque for $40,000 was presented to the Exeter Lions Club and the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation on behalf of the Rasenberg family and the James Rasenberg Sports Trust Fund at the 15th annual conservation dinner held at the South Huron Rec Centre. The donation, in memory of Jamie Rasenberg, was a welcome shot in the arm for the fundraising campaign and will be earmarked for the bridge span- ning the half way point on the MacNaughton Morrison section of the South Huron Trail. It was a definite highlight to an already successful night of conservation boosting. Lions Club committee member George Godbolt said the bridge will be known as the "Stirling Bridge" at the request of the family. The 15th consecutive sell-out for the annual conservation dinner is an indica- tion of the support for the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation and the Exeter Lions Club. Prior to Thursday's event over $400,000 has been raised. Adding over $35,000 raised at the din- ner and the surprise $40,000 Rasenberg contribution shows why the large MacNaughton Morrison Trail project has been a continuing success. In her welcoming remarks chairperson Teresa Ondrejicka encouraged people to put on their running shoes and see the result of their generous donations. The annual fundraiser relies on wide- spread community support from artists, sponsors and other contributors com- bined with competitive auction bidding, raffle tickets, donated prizes and hun- dreds of hours of organizing from volun- teers. This year's feature artist was Elisabeth Tonner-Keats who lives beside the Lucan Conservation Area. Her painting was an original water- colour called "Radiant Beginning". Among other local artists were: Tim Clark, Fred Negrijn, Gerald and Matthew Johns, Rae Ann Ladouceur, Randy Jones and Mervin Johnson. Master of Ceremonies was CFPL per- sonality Kate Young. Auctioneers Bob Heywood, Kevin McArter, Hugh Filson and Norm Whiting used their skills to make sure as much money as possible went for each item auctioned. ivrIk4OPVINFP Iu UU11 1UIUI'IL Extracting money in a friendly way is an art form mastered by auctioneer Hugh Filson.
