Students attend Construction Skills Wiibition
TORONTO —
"Consider a career in
our industry and do
something construc-
tive."
That is the message
being hammered home
at a three-day, hands-
on exposition to show-
case con-
struction
trade and
manage-
ment skills.
"Too often
we hear
that teach-
ers, parents
and guid-
ance coun-
sellors tell
our young
people that
construc-
tion careers
are what
you should
choose if
you can't
succeed at anything
else," James Moffat, a
Director of the Ontario
Construction Secretariat
(OCS), said March 29 at
the official opening of
Future Building 2004.
"Well, that's simply not
true. What could be
wrong with a career
where you can use both
your mind and your
hands, can travel virtu-
ally anywhere in the
world with marketable
skills and even 'earn
while you learn' during
your apprenticeship
training?"
Approximately 15,000
students, teachers, out-
of-school youth, parents
and others attended
more than 20 demon-
strations and exhibits of
some of the complex
skills required by the
industrial, commercial
and institutional (ICI)
construction sector.
Future Building 2004,
which was being held
March 29-31 at the
National
Trade Centre
on Princes'
Boulevard on
the CNE
Grounds in
Toronto, is
hosted by the
Ontario
Construction
Secretariat
with funding
assistance
from Human
Resource and
S kills
Development
Canada and
the Ontario
Ministry of
Colleges, Training and
Universities.
A demonstration of
organized labour and
management working
together and in partner-
ship with governments
to help build Ontario's
future, Future Building
2004 provided visitors
with the opportunity to
speak with industry
experts from a variety
of trades and occupa-
tions.
Apprentices and pro-
fessionals were avail-
able at the show to
provide detailed infor-
mation about their
work, apprenticeship
programs and to guide
visitors through a vari-
ety of interactive dis-

plays and demonstra-
tions.
Visitors were encour-
aged to try their hands
at many of the skills
involved in construc-
tion.
Along with the dis-
plays, exhibitions and
interactive demonstra-
tions, Future Building
2004 also featured a
"Construction Trivia
Game" comprising sev-
eral thousand construc-
tion -related questions
and answers. Prizes
include hardhats and
knapsacks.
"Our construction
trade unions and union-
ized contractors are here
to dispel the negative
myths and misconcep-
tions about our indus-
try," Scott Macivor,
OCS's Chief Executive
Officer, said. "We will
actively prove that 'It's
cool to use a tool.' We
want people to know
that there is nothing
quite like the pride of
pointing to a structure
and being able to say, 'I
built that.' Working in
the organized ICI con-
struction sector is excit-
ing, fulfilling and
rewarding."
