Panthers capture OFSAA bronze in Pembroke PEMBROKE - The Panther girls captured the bronze medal in the OFSAA girls A/AA hockey champi- onship in Pembroke March 30. It is the first OFSAA medal for South Huron girls hockey at the first OFSAA tournament they have quali- fied for. The girls came out with a perfect 3-0 record in pool play defeating Opeongo 2-1, North Lambton 3-0 and Kincardine 2-0 to advance to the semi-fmal round. In pool play Katie Stewart notched three goals, Leanne Cronyn picked up two and Emily Sararas played a strong tournament with a single goal and three assists. Kristen Ferguson added an empty-netter for the Panthers and Lea Mudge had two shutouts in net. This advanced the Panthers to a semi-final show- down with the Lockerby Vikings from Sudbury. Sudbury played a strong, physical game and although the Panthers had several chances, they came out on the wrong end of the 4-2 score. Stewart picked up two goals from Kristen Reschke and Sararas in the loss. This moved the Panthers into the bronze medal game against St. Michael's from Niagara Falls. The Panthers struck first on a goal by Kelsey O'Rourke from Jessica Bickell and Reschke. St. Mike's tied it at the end of the first, but the Panthers again took the lead on a goal from Reschke with an assist to Julie Farquhar. St. Mike's again clawed back with a goal notching the game at two. They took the lead for the first time at the six minute mark of the third, but the Panthers struck back on an unassisted effort by Stewart. This set up an exciting three on three sudden death overtime. The Panthers finally sealed the victory when Kelly Cronyn put a backhand upstairs, assisted by Leanne Cronyn and Stewart. Panther assistant coach Lynne Farquhar said the team played a fantastic tournament and were great ambassadors for South Huron both on and off the ice. The team and coaches thank everyone for over- whelming support of their fundraising efforts, as well as support throughout the season.
