Forum will examine
influences on teens
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Ever wonder
about what influences,
challenges and choices
your teen faces everyday?
A community forum at
South Huron District High
School April 15 at 7:30
p.m. in the small gym will
deal with the issues
today's teens are facing.
"Teenagers: Under the
Influence," will feature a
panel of experts in the
field who deal with teens.
Confirmed to speak at
the forum are Cindy
Wesley of Parents Against
Violence Everywhere
(PAVE). Wesley, whose
14 -year-old daughter
committed suicide after
being threatened and bul-
lied at school, will talk
about bullying.
University of Western
Ontario professor Michael
Katchabaw will speak on
the addictiveness of video
games and the influence
the violence in video
games has on teens.
Dana Bozzato, a social
worker with the Huron -
Perth Centre in Clinton,
will speak on the family
pressures facing teens.
South Huron District
High School principal Jeff
Reaburn said there is the
possibility there will be
speakers from the Huron
County Health Unit and
the OPP, but he's still
awaiting confirmation.
Local resident Bonnie
Baynham, who was
instrumental in getting the
Exeter Youth Centre open
and who has ties with
many youth services in the
county, will moderate the
forum.
Reaburn said the forum
will start with short pre-
sentations from each
panel member, who will
speak on their concerns
and observations on the
influences on teens. After
the opening statements,
there will be a discussion
among the panel members
followed by questions and
discussions from the audi-
ence.
Reaburn said he is hop-
ing some students will
attend the forum,
although the focus of this
forum is for parents and
the community at large.
He's hoping the discussion
brings about increased
awareness.
"What I'd like to see
come out of this is an
awareness in the commu-
nity that the things we see
at school are also happen-
ing in the community.
They may be happening in
the street or at the Rec
Centre. The issues don't
go away, they aren't
things that happen only at
school. We would like to
create more of an involved
partnership with the com-
munity in trying to deal
with these things."
Reaburn said the idea of
the community forum
came out of a discussion
with the school council
and how to deal with bul-
lying.
"We can do things at
school, but they need to be
reinforced at home and in
the community."
