Ausable River Recovery
AUSABLE BAYFIELD —The Ausable River water-
shed is home to many plants and animals. Some of
these species are rare in Canada; 14 species of fishes,
mussels and reptiles that live in the river have been
nationally listed as endangered, threatened or special
concern. Several of these species are globally rare
and found at only a few locations in Canada.
The Ausable River Recovery Team, formed in 2002,
is holding the third in a series of public meetings for
input in the development of a recovery strategy for
the Ausable River.
In 2003, public meetings were held to introduce the
Recovery Team and present background information
at Pinery Provincial Park in April 2003 and to gather
public input for strategies to sustain healthy native
aquatic communities within the Ausable River in
Exeter in July 2003.
The purpose of the public meeting scheduled for
April 19 at 7 p.m. at the Ailsa Craig Recreation Centre
is to introduce the recovery strategies that have been
drafted by the Recovery Team and seek further input.
"Public participation is key to the implementation of
actions outlined in the recovery strategy," says Mari
Veliz, Healthy Watersheds Specialist for the Ausable
Bayfield Conservation Authority.
The Ausable River Recovery Team has representa-
tives from federal, provincial and local government
agencies as well as academia and local experts. The
goal of the recovery strategy is to sustain healthy
native aquatic communities within the Ausable River,
focusing on species at risk. To date, the Recovery
Team has prepared four background reports (water
quality, fluvial geomorphology, land use, species at
risk) and has synthesized this information into one
document. The team has conducted preliminary bio-
logical surveys across the Ausable River, drafted a
strategy that prioritizes actions related to research
and monitoring, management, stewardship and edu-
cation and provided incentive dollars to landowners
to implement best management practices.
Copies of the Ausable River Recovery Strategy draft
will be made available. Contact Mari Veliz at the
ABCA at 235-2610 for further information.

Some medications are available in sublingual
funder the tongue) form. The rich supply of blood
vessels in this area allows the medication to
absorb quickly and work quickly. If you use this
form of medication, be sure your mouth isn't too dry. Sip a little water
first. This will ensure the tablet will dissolve and absorb well.
Health information is available everywhere. Much of the information
can be misleading. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If
the source is someone selling a product, the facts could be biased
to sell more products. Carefully check the facts, the pros and the
cons and do research independent of the seller.
Smoking bad effect #79: Tobacco smoke irritates the voice box
causing localized swelling and thickening of the vocal cords. This
thickening can lower the voice making it sound harsh and raspy.
About 20% of patients don't get their prescriptions filled. There are
many reasons for this: they don't feel sick, don't agree with the
diagnosis, afraid of side effects, or they would rather try something
"natural". Cost can also be a factor. If you have concerns that might
put you in this group, talk to your doctor and pharmacist. Get the
right answers.
