Hawks one game away from finals up 3-0 on Lakers
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — The Exeter
Hawks are one game
away from the OHA all -
Ontario finals after taking
the first three games of
their semifinal against the
Port Stanley Lakers.
The Hawks won a hard
fought 3-2 decision over
the Lakers in the opening
game of the series
Tuesday night in Exeter
before outgunning the
Lakers in a 9-5 shootout
Friday night in Port
Stanley.
Exeter took a 3-0 stran-
gle hold on the series at
home Sunday with a 3-1
win and were attempting
to finish off the Lakers
Tuesday night in Port
Stanley.
Game five if necessary
will be in Exeter Friday
night at 8:30 p.m. with
game six in Port Stanley
April 3 and game seven
back in Exeter at 7:30
p.m. Sunday.
In the other semifinal
Tavistock leads
Hagersville 3-1 with the
series resuming tonight
(Wednesday).
The Hawks opened the
scoring in game one with
Jeff Finkbeiner redirecting
a cross ice pass from Pat
Clark early in the period.
The Lakers evened it
with a high shot over the
shoulder off Exeter goalie
Cam Becker but Justin
Knee put the Hawks back
in front, one timing a pass
from Shawn Sherwood in
for a 2-1 lead.
The Lakers thought they
had the only goal of the
second period on a shot
Becker got a piece of and
dropped behind him, but
the puck landed on the
line to keep it a 2-1 game.
The Hawks took a two -
goal lead early in the third
as Clark's high shot from
the blueline fooled the
Lakers goalie.
Port Stanley added a late
goal but couldn't take
advantage of a power play
late to get the equa.li7er.
Both teams brought their
offence Friday night as
they fired three goals each
in the first period.
The Hawks took a 2-0
lead on goals from Justin
LaPorte and Travis Elder
before the Lakers fired
three straight including a
pair of power play goals
for a 3-2 lead.
But Sherwood's goal
before the period was over
left it 3-3 going into the
second.
Four goals in just over
five minutes by the
Hawks, with a lone Laker
reply, put the Hawks
ahead to stay.
Finkbeiner started the
assault five minutes into
the period, followed by
Jason Stuckless, LaPorte
and Clark.
Clark added his second
goal and third point of the
night minutes later for a
8-4 Exeter lead.
A Port Stanley goal with
one second left in the peri-
od cut the lead to three,
but LaPorte's third goal of
the game and fifth point
capped the 8-5 Exeter
win.
Sunday night in Exeter,
Becker came within one
second of a shutout and
the Hawks got all the
offence they needed in the
second period.
After a scoreless first
period an unassisted effort
by Travis Elder put the
Hawks ahead to stay.
Finkbeiner gave them a
two -goal margin with an
unassisted short handed
effort three minutes later
before Sherwood's goal
with 11 seconds left in the
period sealed the win.
