South
Huron
success
continues
High school students in
the area have had a lot
to boast about this past
year with their many
accomplishments both
in and out of school.
This school year South
Huron has sent three of
its athletic teams to
OFSAA in field hockey,
boys curling and girls
hockey. Many other stu-
dents are also on teams
outside of school which
have had much success,
such as hockey or
ringette.
Also, the SHDHS
music department's
Intermediate and Senior
concert bands and Red
and Black Jazz bands
made an impressive
showing at the recent
Regional Music Fest in
London, with the Black
Jazz band having a gold
level performance. The

EXETER — Everyone at South Huron is back
into routine after the March Break.
This week we are doing fundraising for Jesse's
Journey. In the period one classes, students have
been collecting change. Money raised by Jesse's
Journey will go toward research into genetic dis-
eases such as Muscular Dystrophy. The classroom
that collects the most money per
student will win a free pizza
party. Please remember to raid
your piggy banks and bring your
spare change to period one class-
es Friday.
The Thirty Hour Famine is tak-
ing place this Friday and
Saturday. This will be the
eleventh consecutive famine held
at South Huron. There has been
outstanding interest shown by
students, with 199 students signed up to partici-
pate. There are a lot of activities planned to keep
everyone busy, including games, movies, karaoke
and more. Money raised through this event goes
toward famine relief, education projects in third
world countries and programs for impoverished
Canadians. If you would like to make a donation
to the Thirty Hour Famine, you may call the
school at 235-0880. Thanks for your support!
Next Tues., April 6, is Grad Photo Retake Day.
Graduating students who would like retakes and
those who have not yet had grad photos taken,
are asked to sign up in the office as soon as possi-
ble.
Just a reminder that report cards will be sent
home today.

One of the questions we often are asked as
pharmacists is "How can you read the doctor's
writing?" This is a problem occasionally but soon
doctors will be able to electronically send
prescriptions to your pharmacy and they will be totally legible. This
new system is starting in the U.S. and will surely be in Canada soon.
Cola drinks contain phosphoric acid which may bind to calcium in
the body and reduce bone density. Women who drink 3 or 4 cans of
cola drinks a day may take that risk. Although work is still being
done on this, it is a good idea to restrict cola use, especially in young
girls.
Don't use cotton -tipped swabs to clean wax out of your ears. You
could push the wax in deeper and risk puncturing your eardrum.
There are safe over-the-counter products for removing earwax.
Infection -control experts are recommending people working in the
health professions use alcohol -based gels on their hands during the
work day. They are quick to use and do reduce the risk of spreading
infection. You can use them in your own home also. It's important to
apply enough so you can rub your hands together for about 20
seconds before they are dry.
If you are traveling, these alcohol rubs are great to take with you.
Use them often. Also, make sure you have enough of your routinely -
taken medication with you. Its one less worry on your trip.

It's hard for me
to think that there
are still certain
people out there
who think that
high school stu-
dents are nothing
other than lazy
and unambitious.
Do they think that
anyone who is
under those stereotypes
would give the dedica-
tion needed for all of
those various groups to
get where they are
today?
I don't play hockey or
any other related win-
ter sport, but I'm fairly
certain that if the only
ice time you can get for
practice is in the early
morning, you take it.
Doing that several times
a week, plus games, can
really have an effect on
some people, especially
those who play for both
a high school and town
team.
Being in Senior con-
cert band, I see a lot of
the dedication put in by
other students in the
program. I am only in
the one band, which
practices before school
twice a week, but some
of my fellow members
are a part of two or
more bands, often find-
ing themselves at school
early in the morning at
least four days a week.
It can't be forgotten
that all of these stu-
dents also have various
amounts of school work
and after school jobs to
worry about, and have
to develop time man-
agement skills and
learn how to deal with
some of the
stress that
comes with
being involved
with so much
at once.
So I would
just like to say
congratula-
tions and good
luck to all of
my fellow
classmates at South
Huron who are mem-
bers of teams, clubs or
groups for the success
and pride they have
given to the school and
surrounding area. Their
hardwork and dedica-
tion should not be over-
looked.
