The Goderich Signal - Star reported a near capacity crowd — com- plete with horns, signs and anything else used to rally the troops — packed the Maitland Recreation Centre to support the hometown Sailorettes March 20. Jr. D. franchise SEAFORTH Seaforth's proposal to start up a Junior D. hockey team after a two-year absence was turned down March 21 by the Ontario Hockey Association's junior development league. The Huron Expositor reported while organiz- er Jason Papple point- ed to the loss of Seaforth players from the Mitchell Hawks for the 7-6 league vote against Seaforth, the OHA's junior develop- ment chair Karen Phibbs said the whole league was concerned about the number of available players in the area. Approves e CLINTON — Central Huron residents will see a 3.01 per cent hike in their municipal property taxes for 2004. The Clinton News - Record reported coun- cil agreed to the hike at a meeting March 15, which was attended by only one resident who was concerned about budget deliberations. Food Share BLYTH — The North Huron Community Food Share will launch its new April campaign in hopes of collecting more food for the needy and in support of this, local groups will be holding food drives throughout the area. The Citizen reported the Food Share, which started with a dedicat- ed group of volunteers 10 years ago, is govern- ment registered and operated by a board of directors. It is funded solely through contri- butions and is a non- denominational food bank, which should not be confused with any of the food banks operat- ed by local churches. Board spokesperson Maggie Myers said the Food Share's aim is to collect enough non-per- ishable food items to last until November during its month-long campaign. New curriculum brings problems Continued from front page per cent success rate for the Huron -Perth board's initial version of the OSSLC, offered to 13 stu- dents during the fall/win- ter semester at St. Anne's secondary school in Clinton. Three more ver- sions of the OSSLC are being held this semester at St. Michael secondary school in Stratford. "I was talking to one of the teachers for this course, and she was very excited that these stu- dents are learning the lit- eracy skills that they couldn't demonstrate in the (OSSLT)," Parr told trustees. He added "it's still a very strenuous cur- riculum" that not all stu- dents — particularly some identified with Special Needs — will be able to pass, but "the Literacy Course is a very important element in sav- ing a lot of these stu- dents." As Students -at -Risk principal — hired as the Huron -Perth board's response to a grant pro- vided late last year by the provincial government — Parr has encountered some other less -publi- cized effects of the new curriculum. Of particular concern is a high failure rate in Grades 9 and 10 math and science among students hoping to enter the workforce following high school. From the recently -com- pleted fall/winter semes- ter, there was a 10.5 per cent failure rate among students taking Grade 9 science at what's called the "Applied" level. For Grade 10 Applied science, the failure rate was 11.5 per cent. Applied -level Math failure rates in those two grades were 6.5 per cent and 10 per cent. This trend is similar across the province, and is identified by King as a key reason why 25 per cent of students entering high school in Ontario choose not to complete their studies. In the Huron -Perth board, the "drop-out rate" is 10 per cent, which Parr says is still "an indication that there's work to be done." According to Parr, the poor success rate in these courses leads to trouble for school administrators when it comes to schedul- ing or even offering 2004 Catalogue - Instore & Newspaper Correction We wish to draw your attention to the following in our current '2004 Catalogue'. Cnote 2004 catalogue - All zones Applied -level courses in Grade 11 and 12. "Our two high schools try to offer a broad menu of workbound courses in Grades 11 and 12, but it's hard because the stu- dents who are in the workbound stream aren't there signing up for Grade 11 courses," he explained. "They're still back trying to get their Grade 9 and 10 courses." Parr advised trustees that the challenges faced by Applied -level students need to be addressed. He also suggested promoting the option of attending Summer School courses, offered in this district by the Avon Maitland District School Board. Everything needed for a comfortable, contemporary lifestyle is found on the main level while an unfinished basement provides storage space, or room for future expansion. The appeal of this design begins with the exterior where a combination of wood siding and rock facing gives the home an inviting, traditional look. A covered porch entry projects just beyond the line of the double garage. A window in the peaked roof creates the illusion of a second level. Double front doors open to a generous foyer with a display nook and a coat closet. The home's second bedroom is located just to the left of the foyer, along with a three-piece bathroom. This bedroom is perfect for overnight guests. It would also make a convenient home office. Stairs leading to the basement flank one side of the great room. On the opposite side, floor -to -ceiling windows overlook a spacious rear sundeck. A fireplace is centered on the wall in the great room, where it can also be seen from the kitchen. Nine -foot ceilings add to the feeling of openness in this area. The modern kitchen features a large prep island, a corner pantry and a double sink with a window that overlooks thebackyard. From the dining area, a door opens to the partially covered sundeck - the ideal spot for a gas barbecue. A short hall from the great room leads to the private master bedroom suite. Here, a walk-in clothes closet and a linen cupboard offer ample storage. The ensuite bathroom has a soaker tub set into a boxed out window, a separate shower stall and a double vanity. The laundry room is placed between the garage and the home's central hallway, making a handy second entry from the front of the home. This plan measures 46 feet wide by 50 feet deep and has 1,506 square feet of finished living space. Plans for design H1-2-581 are available for $494 (set of 5), $571 (set of 8) and $620 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7.5% Prov. Sales Tax.
