Exeter minor ball back on the diamond

EXETER — Another
season of minor baseball
and blastball is just
around the corner.
Registration for both
will be held March 24 and
31 at the South Huron
Rec Centre from 7 p.m. to
9 p.m.
It is the third year for
blastball in Exeter. It has
grown from 15 players in
the first year to 45 last
year on eight teams and
minor ball president Dave
Reid said they are hoping
for similar numbers this
year.
Although the normal
age for blastball is four,
three year olds are also
welcome.
There were four junior
rookie teams last season
with between 45 and 50
players, and around 15
players in the senior rook-
ies.
Blastball will be at the
Tim Bit diamond
Saturday mornings with
the junior rookies playing
Friday nights.
Blastball will end
between Aug. 5 and 10.
The Mosquitos, Peewee
and Bantam teams each
had 25 players last season
and Reid said they expect
to have two Bantam
teams and two Pee Wee
teams this season.
A fundraiser run by the
Juniors ball team is
planned to be held at a
local golf course for May
or June with the assis-
tance of minor ball.
The fundraising pro-
gram for lights at Alvin
Willert field is halfway to
its goal, having collected
around $50,000 and is
applying for a Trillium
grant.
Thirty signs around the
field are being sold to
businesses at a cost of
$1,000 for three years
which covers all mainte-
nance.
There were 130 players
at all levels of minor ball
and Reid said they are
shooting for 150 this year
with a goal of 200 kids by
2006.
Reid added players from
everywhere in South
Huron are encouraged to
join Exeter ball.
Coaches and volunteers
are needed at all levels.
