Close encounter with Crediton wildlife
CREDITON — Crediton resident Debbie Hayter got an
up close look at a visitor around her house last week.
After her neighbours and daughter had seen a large
bird in their back yard which is close to a
ravine,Hayter saw a wild male turkey in her yard.
Grabbing her camera, she began taking pictures of
the bird which started walking toward her as she con-
tinued to take pictures.
When the turkey started to run towards her, Hayter
ran for the house with the bird in pursuit. When she
slammed the door shut, his beak hit the glass and
began pounding on it.
The turkey remained at her door while spectators
watched in amusement, until the bird walked around
to another window and tried to get in before saunter-
ing off.
The next day, Hayter was outside when she noticed a
neighborhood girl of about 12 walking down the side-
walk coaxing the turkey along behind her like a puppy.
He would only go about two houses down and decid-
ed that was as far as he would go and retraced his
steps with the girl following him.
Coming back into Hayter's yard, he checked out her
flower bed, walked past Hayter, circled her car and
came back up to her.
As she stood still with her back to the bird, she saw
his wings spread and was hit or poked with his beak.
Jumping into the back seat of the car, Hayter pulled
the door shut, while the bird poked at it, with the front
door wide open.
The girl ran off and the turkey sauntered away again.
Hayter left the house shortly after and saw the turkey
was back in the ravine behind her house.
She's not sure why the bird has been so close to her
house, but even though it has taken a dislike to her,
she says it has been amusing.

than she would have liked at a wild turkey wandering
around her property last week. (photo/submitted)
