Seven members donned green wearing apparel in observance of St. Patrick's Day. President Shirley Cooper opened the meeting with a reading, 'My Most Embarrassing Moment.' The roll call was answered by telling your favourite way of serving potatoes. In the business the following events were mentioned: a ROSE Program train- ing workshop in Ilderton Hall April 29; the Huron South District annual meeting in Zurich May 20; the Huron South District Picnic July 6 in Crediton. A letter was read for information regarding changes to the Huron County Bursary Fund. This will be voted on at the County Rally in September. A donation of funds was voted to the Exeter Agricultural Society regarding prize money for the 150th Fall Fair. Convenor Grace Pym combined two themes for the program, `Tasty Tators and Such' and 'St. Patrick's Day.' A reading 'A Little Green Goes a Long Way' informed all about St. Patrick the patron saint of Ireland, a man who was in fact Scottish. He lived to be 71 years old and died in 461. Irish songs were named and a Lodge draw proceeds go to Lupus Foundation EXETER - DDP Isa Rabbets paid her official visit to the lodge on March 17. The meeting was preceded by a deli- cious potluck supper. The charter was draped in memory of three deceased sisters. Thanks to all for buying tickets on the prize of din- ner for four at Eddington's. Darryl Kingma of William St., Exeter was the lucky win- ner. All proceeds from the draw will go to support Lupus Foundation. J.M. Muriel Parsons gave a reading, 'Meet the Tators.' Pym reminded the group that March was recognized as National Nutrition month by the Dieticians of Canada and the Dairy Farmers of Canada. She displayed seven varieties of pota- toes and involved the members in identifying them. Sweet potatoes do not belong to the potato family. It is vine -like plant belonging to the same family as the Morning Glory. The type of sweet potatoes nor- mally grown for human consumption are often wrongly referred to as yams. The true yam is from a different family of plants and not com- mercially grown in North America. Sweet potato roots are rich in Vitamins A and C and potassium. Potatoes are native to South America and were slow to be adopted by early settlers to North 415;04. America. The potato helped save Ireland from famine in 1740, and Prussia in 1774. Late blight destroyed the fresh potato crop in the 1840's and resulted in massive starvation and immigration to North America. Potatoes are the greatest comfort food of all time and known to be the most valuable vegetable crop in Canada. It is a healthy vegetable rich in Vitamin C, dietary fibre and folacin, an excellent source of potassium and has no fat. Info sheets with facts relating to potato varieties, buying, storing, preparation and several recipes provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food were handed out to the members. In keeping with the colour for the day, the hostess served a green and white dessert. Annual membership fees will be paid and volun- teer hours reported at the next meeting April 19 at Shirley Cooper's home.
