(photo/submitted) EXETER — An Exeter ringette player has been ranked 10th overall defensively in Ontario after the provincial AA championship. Melanie Smith -Lalonde is a member of the Exeter Petite team and the Huron Perth AA's. She has been playing ringette for six years and joined the Huron Perth Mitchell team midway through the season after trying out at the begin- ning of the season. Lalonde said it was an adjustment to the AA team, moving from centre in Exeter back to defence on the HP team as well as the faster pace of the AA games. But with good skating and shooting skills, and an ability to read the play before it happens, Smith racked up 10 points in the provincial championships, helping her team earn a silver medal, losing to Nepean in the finals. Lalonde said the biggest improvement in her game through the season was aggressiveness and know- ing when to jump into the play. She was ranked 10th out of the 130 players in the tournament and said she was surprised to be ranked so high. Huron Perth finished first overall in the league as well as taking gold in all six tournaments they played in. After a pair of losses in Tweed, the Atoms rebounded Saturday, matching a bigger oppo- nent hit for hit. Lucan goaltender Sean Hazelwood was sharp throughout the game, keeping Tweed off the scoreboard and giving his team a chance to win. Hazelwood was finally beaten in the third, with no chance on a shot from the slot. But the lead was shortlived as Jake Worrad replied for the Atoms, cutting across the net, and scoring while falling down to force the overtime. Despite the loss Atom coach Paul Wright said the team had a great year. "The boys had a great run this year. Our overall record was 35-21-6 (including a second place finish in our division) and a 9-4-3 play- off record. Our success this year stemmed from hard work, great goaltending, and a total team effort. All of the boys have improved sig- nificantly over the course of the season, and even though we fell a little short in the end, I am very proud of the way we finished." Ringette silver medal at Winter Games By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF LONDON — Hensall resident Amber Caldwell earned a silver medal with her Western Region Regional AAA ringette team at the Ontario Winter games in London March 11-14. The Western team played six games over the course of the tourna- ment, losing their first match to Eastern before defeating Southern, the Central Cyclones, Northern and Southern again in the semi-finals to advance to the finals against Eastern. Western lost a hard fought 5-3 game to the Eastern team which went undefeated through the season. Caldwell said the team knew it would be a tough game before it started. "Our team was pretty confident it might be in the finals but we never said we would be. We just took one game at a time and if we won one game, good, let's go on to the next." Despite the loss, Caldwell enjoyed the Winter Games, saying it was a "lifetime experi- ence."
