GRAND BEND — Artists
from Ottawa to Windsor
have painted the Huron
shores.
On March 13 the
Lambton Heritage
Museum unveiled the
scenic artwork submis-
sions at the 7th annual
Paint the Huron Shores
Art Show & Sale.
Just under 200 entries
were judged by Jens
Thielsen of the Thielsen
Gallery of London.
Of those, 130 are for
sale and displayed at the
museum, ranging in price
from $55 to $6,000.
Best in Show and a
$2,000 prize went to
Lynda White of London
for her watercolour
"Drift." Second place and
$500 went to Renee
Knight of St. Marys for
"Gummerstone Gad."
Honourable mentions
went to Aili Kurtis of
Ottawa for "Killarney
Dusk" and Josy Hilkes
Britton of Grand Bend for
"Retourner."
"We keep raising the
bar on quality every year,
and it's a joy to see the
show gaining both in size
and stature amongst the
professional art communi-
ty every year," said show
co-ordinator Barry
Richman, a noted pastel
artist. "That in turn trans-
lates into increased sales."
The show only accepts
representational art that
depicts the shoreline of
Lake Huron and its near-
by attractions, for the
area stretching from
Sarnia to Tobermory and
including Georgian Bay.
All the artwork is for
sale during the full period
of the show. Typically
about three dozen pieces
of work are sold during
the show.
"This show boosts our
tourism profile by remind-
ing the public about the
natural beauty that we
enjoy in the beach dis-
tricts along Lake Huron,
and just how accessible
that is to Ontario resi-
dents," said Lambton
Heritage Museum Curator
Robert Tremain.
"The art show also com-
plements other activities
underway in March at the
Lambton Heritage
Museum, such as the
Return of the Swans
migration festival."
The Paint the Huron
Shores Art Show & Sale is
open daily from March 13
to April 4, from 10 a.m. to
5 p.m.

Cruise ship coming
to Huron County
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
SOUTH HURON — The
Great Lakes are the
world's last untapped
market for cruise ships.
So says Inbound Ontario
president Judy Crawford,
who spoke to South Huron
council Monday night
about an economic devel-
opment program to
attract cruise ships to
Goderich. One ship, the
Nantucket Clipper, will
visit Goderich five times
this summer. Crawford is
hoping more cruise ships
visit the area in future
summers.
The venture is being
promoted as a way for
Huron County communi-
ties to promote them-
selves and try to attract
the ship's passengers
while in port.
Crawford said cruises
are the fastest growing
tourism sector and, in
2003, 10 million people
went on cruises. Over
eight million were from
North America.
"We're in the right place
at the right time,"
Crawford said of the
opportunity for Huron
communities to feel the
economic benefits of tours
coming to Goderich.
"Unfortunately, we can't
have the ships dock in
Exeter," she said.
Cruise ships travelling
the Great Lakes hold
about 100 passengers and
35 crew members.
Crawford said passengers
and crew members will
spend an estimated
$58,750 during their five
visits to the county this
summer.
She said if ship traffic is
increased over the next
three years,
passenger/crew expenses
in Huron County could
rise to about $640,000.
Crawford is working on
a number of packages to
encourage passengers to
visit different areas of
Huron County. A South
Huron package could
include a spa visit, shop-
ping, theatre tickets and
dinner at Eddington's.
Other getaways include
the Starlite Drive -In in
Shipka, antique stores and
cruising the main strip in
Grand Bend.
Crawford said cruises
are expensive — about
$2,500 per person for a
week.
The efforts to promote
communities to the cruise
ships has a $20,000 bud-
get and Crawford asked
for $1,000 from South
Huron.
Mayor Rob Morley said
council will look to the
South Huron Chamber of
Commerce and the BIA to
financially support the
program.
While Coun. Peter
Armstrong said he could-
n't officially guarantee the
BIA will support it, he is
"very positive."
Even with the $1,000
contribution, Crawford
admitted she can't guar-
antee passengers will visit
Exeter as the cruise com-
pany will make decisions
on where excursions will
take place.
She said she hopes the
company will give passen-
gers a choice on where
they want to visit.
