Midgets take 1-0 lead
over Ennismore
EXETER - The South
Huron Sabres took a 1-0
lead in their OMHA Major
Midget 'CC' playoffs
against defending cham-
pions Ennismore March
13 with a 5-2 win in
Exeter.
Games two and three
will go in Ennismore
March 20 at 7 p.m. and
March 21 at 3:30 p.m.
Sabres coach Darren
Kints said although
Ennismore outshot
Exeter, excellent goal-
tending by Sean Ellison
was the difference.
Kints added the game
was closer than what the
score showed, with
Exeter getting a pair of
empty net goals late in
the game.
"They've got a good
hockey team. It was a
very fast game and we'll
have to control ourselves
a little better. We got into
a little penalty trouble
and against a team like
that if you give them too
many chances, they'll
definitely beat you."
Kints said he was really
happy with the way the
team played, especially
since it was missing four
regulars due to holidays,
although all will be back
this weekend.
South Huron got a pair
of goals each from Jeff
Smale and Jason
Thompson with Mitch
Homuth adding one.

finals March 13 in

Picking up assists were
Greg Thompson, Curtis
Pfaff, Larry Northover,
Brendon Van Osch and
Jason Thompson.
EXETER - The Lucan
Irish took a 2-1 lead in
their series against the
Exeter Hawks with a 4-0
win over the Hawks
Friday night in Exeter.
The Hawks had
evened the series March
10 in Lucan with a 6-2
win.
Game four will go
tonight (Wednesday) at
7:45 p.m. with game five
in Exeter at 8:30 p.m.
Wednesday night the
Hawks got on the board
early, just under two
minutes into the first
period on a goal by
Shawn Sherwood.
Lucan took advantage
of a power play late in
the period to tie it up
when Ryan Giffen
flipped in a rebound.
But the Hawks took
the lead again just a
minute later on their
own power play, when
Jason Stuckless picked
up a rebound and
buried it past Lucan
goalie Joe Dobbie for a
2-1 lead.
A close checking sec-
ond period allowed few
chances by either team
and both goalies were
sharp, with Exeter
goalie Justin Hayter
stopping Adam
Thomson on a break-
away.
The Hawks took a 4-1
lead late in the period
with a pair of goals two
minutes apart, going up
3-1 off a faceoff win as
Joe Nesbitt wristed a
shot in on goal that beat
Dobbie, before Pat Clark
and Chad Deman broke
in shorthanded with
Deman firing home a
rebound for a 4-1 lead.
Lucan got the start
they wanted in the third,
scoring just 30 seconds
in as Matt Read thread-
ed a cross ice pass onto
the stick of Tom Burns
who redirected it into
the net.
But it was all Lucan
could get as Hayter
closed the door and the
Hawks added two more
from Daryl Bourne and
Jeff Finkbeiner for the
6-2 win.
Getting assists for the
Hawks were Finkbeiner,
Justin Knee, Sherwood,
Evan Lutz with a pair
and Adam Hartman.
Mark Read, Mike
Burns, Matt Read and
Andrew Lang had
assists for the Irish.
Shots on goal were even
at 40 apiece with Exeter
one for eight with the
man advantage and
Lucan one for seven.
Friday night in Exeter,
the Irish got the only
goal they would need in
the first as Burns scored
on a power play.
Lucan added two more
in the second from Dan
Crowley and Trevor
Smith before Ryan
Brooks sealed the win
late in the third.
Lucan coach Randy
Campbell said he was
happy with the way his
team has played in all
three games against
Exeter.
"The breaks have been
going our way, so hope-
fully we can continue,"
said Campbell.
Exeter went zero for
nine on the power play
and Lucan converted
one of its six chances.
Dobbie stopped all 37
shots for the shutout,
including 15 in the third
period.
Matt Read had a pair
of assists, with singles
from Jamie Jongsma,
Matt Thompson, Mark
Flood and Giffen.
Exeter coach Dave
Revington said the
Hawks weren't being
aggressive and weren't
skating in the two loss-
es.
"More effort will be a
good start. We have to
skate and be more phys-
ical and if you don't do
those things you're not
going to be very suc-
cessful."
In other matchups Port
Stanley leads Lambeth
2-1, Hagersville swept
Burford four straight
and Tavistock and
Wellesley are dead-
locked at one.

Lucan goalie Joe Dobbie Friday night at the Rec
Centre. Dobbie stopped 37 shots to lead the Irish to
a 4-0 win and a 2-1 lead in the series. (photo/Mary
